This paper is an attempt to discuss the symbolic images generated from fragmented human bodily parts in the early works of T.S.Eliot's Poetry. Frequently there are images of feet, arms, hands, hair and even skeleton images which are viewed in separation from the bodies to which they belong. Beginning with "The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock", one of Eliot's earliest poems, and proceeding through "Figlia Che Piange" the number of separate body images in each poem increases. Generally, the fragmented images by which these various characters are portrayed reflect the general theme of human fragmentation or human incompleteness. Insofar as a character is portrayed by his various separate bodily parts, he is afflicted by a dualism between his mind and his body. The dualism that we see in Eliot's early poetry is first expressed as a dichotomy between body and mind. Later there is a shift in the context of Christianity to the more specific dichotomy between flesh and spirit which finally becomes expressed in terms of the division between the temporal and the eternal. The role of body images in the poetry of T.S.Eliot has not been sufficiently observed in his major themes. So, this thesis proposes to discuss the symbolic meaning of his distorted and fragmented body images in his early poems to demonstrate the cohesiveness of one of Eliot's most important themes : the movement from psychological and moral divisiveness to spiritual unity.
