ZrCl₄를 이용한 Methyl acrylate 합성 및 콘택트렌즈 응용

Purpose: The conditions for the synthesis of methyl acrylate (MA) via acrylic acid (AA) esterification were optimized. The reaction was catalyzed by ZrCl₄ and performed in the absence of any solvent. In addition, the prepared MA was applied to the production of contact lens. Methods: MA was synthesized via the esterification of acrylic acid (AA) by using ZrCl₄ as an acid catalyst. The numerous parameters were optimized to maximize the yield of MA. MA was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and gas chromatography (GC). Lab-made MA was applied to the synthesis of contact lens to check its potential usability as a contact lens material. Physical properties such as water content (%), visible transmittance (%), and tensile strength (kgf/cm²) were examiend. Results: ZrCl₄ catalyst was used to synthesize MA; a yield of 85.9% was obtained under optimal reaction conditions. The obtained MA was purified to 95.0% by azeotropic distillation. The contact lens manufactured by lab-made MA exhibited excellent visible transmittance and the suitable water content. Conclusions: The physical properties of the manufactured contact lens support the fact that the ZrCl₄ catalyzed MA synthesis process is suitable for the production of contact lens.
