As a material for a diesel particulate filter, metal foam shows better mechanical and thermal characteristics than ceramic. So the feasibility of metal foam filters were investigated in DPF(diesel particulate filter trap) system in this study. Three proto type DPFs using the Pure Nickel foam filter and Nickel alloy(INCONEL 625) foam were tested. The characteristics of back pressure, PM mass and nano-particle reduction performance were compared with wall flow type filter at the various engine operation conditions. It was confirmed that metal foam filters have a possibility for the application in DPF system.

Axial type metal foam filters were investigated to determine the feasibility as DPF filters and to prove PM reduction performance in last study. In this study, several kinds of metal foam filters with various mean pore sizes were evaluated for the characteristics such as pressure drop and PM reduction rates in mass and number density. Metal foam plates were axially stacked in the can which was installed in the exhaust pipe. All tests were performed in engine bench varying engine rpm and load which correspond to the real vehicle velocity conditions. Filters with small mean pore diameter showed high PM reduction rates in both the mass and the number density with higher pressure difference across DPF. Increasing the thickness of filter increased the pressure difference, but the reduction rates didn't increase greatly because the most of the PM was trapped upstream of filter.

As a material for a diesel particulate filter, metal fiber shows better mechanical and thermal characteristics than ceramic. To show the possibility of the application to the metal fiber filter, the performances of the 1^st and 2^nd prototypes were tested in this study. The 2^nd prototype was improved in filter design and pore structure based on the test results of the 1^st prototype. The 2^nd prototype showed 50~85% of PM reduction and had a good performance of particle number reduction during steady state engine operation.

Recently, the Diesel PM's number concentration emitted by Diesel internal combustion engine has focused on attention because this particle matters are suspected being hazardous of human health. In this study, particle condensations and size distribution were measured in the exhaust system of a turbo charged diesel engine, equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC). A scanning mobility particle sizer(SMPS) system was applied to measure the particle number and size concentration of diesel exhaust particles, at the front and rear position of diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) along the engine speed and load conditions. As the result, the effects of diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) on the Diesel nano particle number and size distribution will be represented in this study.

Porous ceramic ball type pellet filter and metal triangle cone type pellet were tested. Recently, the nano-PM's number concentration emitted by diesel internal combustion engine has focused on attention because this particulate matters are suspected being hazardous of human health. In this study, The nano-PM mass and size of diesel passenger vehicles were measured on chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matters (PM) emissions of these vehicles were investigated by number concentration too. A condensation particle counter (CPC) system was applied to measure the particle number and size concentration of diesel exhaust particles at the end of dilution tunnel along the NEDC(ECE15+EUDC) and CVS-75 vehicle test mode. As the research result, the characteristic of vehicle test mode on the diesel nano-particle number and size distribution was investigated in this study.

Axial type metal foam filters were investigated to determine the feasibility as DPF filters in last study. In this study, catalyzed metal foam filters with 800um pore sizes were evaluated for the characteristics such as pressure drop and gas analysis. Pressure drop tests were performed in rig test bench, others were performed in engine test bench. To investigate the effects of flow rate and temperature on catalyzed metal foam filter, we controled engine rpm and load which correspond to 2400rpm(flow rate) or 290℃(upstream temperature of filter). Filters with same mean pore diameter showed high PM reduction rates and pressure drop as the filter thickness was increasing. But pressure drop was lower than cordierite DOC. Also increasing the thickness of filter exhaust gas was lower and the level was similar to codierite DOC.
