이 글은 1909년에 출간한 척독서 『독습일한척독』의 상대높임법에 대한 연구이다. 그간 계몽기 척독서에 대한 연구는 목록 정리, 이본 간 대조 연구 등을 중심으로 이루어졌는데, 척독서는 수·발신자가 신분 차이에 따라 높임 태도를 선택하는 장르적 특성을 가진 자료로서 상대높임법을 연구하기에 유용한 자료이기도 하다. 상대높임법 분야에서 척독서를 대상으로 한 연구가 동일시기 기타 자료보다 미흡한 사실을 고려하여, 본 연구에서는 척독서 『독습일한척독』을 상대로, 그것에 실현된 상대높임법에 대하여 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 아주높임, 예사높임, 아주낮춤, 반말 등 네 개 등급의 종결어미가 나타났고, 수신자가 상위계층이면 하소서체, 동위계층 사이 먼 관계이면 하소서체와 하오체, 친한 관계이면 해라체와 해체가 사용되지만 드물게 하소서체와 하오체도 사용한 것을 발견하였다. 이렇게 필요 이상의 존경도를 가진 원인은 소로문체로 된 일본어 원문에서 찾아 볼 수 있었다. This article studies the relative honorification of 『dok-seub-il-han-cheok-dok』, published in 1909. So far, research on cheok-dok books of enlightenment period has been focused on organizing catalogs and contrasting different versions. However, it has genre characteristics that selects the attitude of honor according to the status of senders and receivers, and is useful for studying the honorification. But, the study on the honorification of cheok-dok books is insufficient compared to others. Thus, the relative honorification in this book was examined. Four grades of final endings were found: very high, formal high, very low, and informal style. If the receiver is higher, Hasoseo style was used; if a distant relationship between the same class, Hasoseo and Hao styles were used; and if a close relationship, Haera and Hae styles were used, but Hasoseo and Hao styles were rarely used. The reason for such respect beyond necessary could be found in the original Japanese text in the shorthand style.

In the early 20th century, to respond to the expanding postal culture of each class, a variety of cheok-dok books were released, and in addition to showing the basic letter rules, they provided various supplementary materials using the blank space in the top portion of the text. In this study, 6 books were selected, and their top portion data were reviewed. By examining the composition and contents of each cheok-dok book, the obscure data in the cheok-dok books published in the early 20th century provides a supplementary explanation for the main body letter rules. It also has a role as a device to help develop Chinese language and Japanese language skills. What s more, through the process of examining the connectivity and complementarity between the top portion and the main text, it was possible to grasp the target readership that each cheok-dok book aims for to some extent.
