The essential oils of Elscholtzia ciliata and the cultivated tissue have been studied. The composition and contents of essential oils were identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The main component of essential oils of E. ciliata was naginata ketone. The essential oils from the flowers, leaves and stems of E. ciliata showed similar patterns of gas chromatogram. In experimental studies on the tissue culture of callus, it has been found that NAA induced higher growth rate and higher content of essential oils than 2, 4-D. The essential oils from the cultivated callus showed different composition from that of mother plants.

Essential oil of the root of Angelica koreana Max. (Umbelliferae) was investigated. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots by steam distillation and fractionated by column chromatography. Each isolate or fraction was identified by GC, GC-MS and spectral analysis. It was found to contain nine monoterpenes such as ${\alpha}-pinene$(7.0%), camphene, ${\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, ${\alpha}-phellandrene$, ${\Delta}-3-carene$, p-cymene, limonene(2.8%), terpinolene and also found to contain m-cresol(11.6%), citronellol, citral b, methylcinnamate, eudesmol and osthol. 2-Hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone and twelve compounds were tentatively identified.

Essential oil of the root of Angelica decursiva(Miq.) Fr. et Sav. (Umbelliferae) was investigated. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots by steam distillation and fractionated by column chromatography. Each isolate or fraction was identified by GC, GC-MS and spectral analysis. It was found to contain ten monoterpenes such as ${\alpha}-pinene$ (7.0%) etc. Three hydrocarbons, two aldehydes, three sesquiterpenes, two sesquiterpene alcohols, one aromatic compounds, one ketone, isobonyl acetate and two lactones were tentatively identified.

상륙(Phrtolaccae Radix)은 한방에서 부기를 없애는 목적으로 쓰이며 민간에서는 신경통치료 및 이뇨제로 사용하고 있다. 상륙의 함유성분중 saponin과 그 genin은 소염작용이 있음이 이미 밝혀졌다. 연자들은 상륙의 약효성분의 생산성을 높이기 위한 가능성을 검토하고자 조직배양법을 이용하여 상륙의 각 기관으로부터 유도한 callus mass의 성분을 TLC상에서 비교하였다. 즉 양자리공(Phytolacca americana)의 줄기를 Linsmair-Skoog 배지에서 유도한 callus를 계대 배양하여 얻은 신선한 Callus mass(약 1.2 ㎏)의 메탄올 엑기스를 분획하고 saponin fraction, 표준품 phytolaccoside A, B, D, E와 비교한 결과 항염증 작용이 강하다고 알려진 phytolaccoside B외에 phytolaccoside D도 callas mass에서 생성됨을 알았다.

93 species of medicinal plants in Korea were examined for the presence of iridoid. By using Trim-Hill reagent, the presence of iridoid was identified in 34 plant samples.
