As an internal combustion engines are increasingly designed much closer to their mechanical limits, techniques for finding more reliable solution under complex constraints have become more critical. Recently, structural optimization techniques are used very popularly for creative design and cost savings. This paper presents the application of topology and shape optimization for cylinder liner of marine diesel engine based on high cycle fatigue assessment. Cylinder liner is simultaneously subject to high thermal and mechanical load that are used for nonlinear structural analysis. The cross-section of cylinder liner was determined by topology optimization which is suitable for initial design. After topology optimization, shape optimization was performed to increase the fatigue strength at the local area where the stress is highly concentrated.
