터보기계내의 유동은 복잡하며 3차원적 현상을 나타낸다. 3차원 설계에 대한 개념은 간단한 모델로부터 유도될 수 있다. 날개의 스윕, 린, 엔드벤드 기법들은 성능을 개선하는데 사용될 수 있지만 만능적인 도구가 아니라 필요할 때 설계자가 채택할 수 있는 추가적인 설계도구로서 생각해야 한다. 이들을 성공적으로 응용하기 위해서는 이들의 영향에 대한 물리적인 이해를 필요로 한다. 설계된 날개로 흘러가는 유동을 상세하게 연구하는데 3차원 Navier-Stokes 수치계산방법이 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

The three dimensional numerical method using actuator disk blade row model is applied for calculating the flowfield interaction between an outlet guide vane (OGV) and a pylon in a typical civil turbofan engine. The static pressure distortion produced by the pylon is decaying upstream but is still felt at the turbofan exit, and hence can significantly affect the fan performance. The OGV amplifies the static pressure perturbation decaying upstream. The calculation results show that cyclic OGV which consists of three types of blades with different exit angles can reduce more than half of the asymmetries of total pressure and static pressure propagated through the OGV with uniform exit blade angle.

The comming of high speed computers with large memory size in recent years has allowed the practical development of codes which solve the Reynolds-averaged NAvier-Stokes (RANS). equations in three dimensions. Such codes are already used by the large engine manufacturers for the advanced design of some engine components. Different computational fluid dynamics approaches and turbulence models exist, and it seems essential today to establish their degree of validity for application to typical configurations in turbomachinery. In 1993 the Turbomachinery Committee of the IGTI of ASME has issued an open invitation to predict the flow details of an isolated transonic fan rotor called as NASA ROTOR 37. This paper reports this test case.

In this study, a preliminary design method of the axial fan was systematically established based on the two-dimensional cascade theory. Flow deviation, lift coefficient, distribution of velocity and pressure coefficient on blade surfaces were predicted by an inviscid flow theory of Martensen method, which was also applied to select an airfoil for required performance in the present design process. The aerodynamic performance of designed blades can be predicted quickly and reasonably by using the through-flow calculation method in the preliminary design process. It would be recommendable to adopt three-dimensional viscous flow calculation at the final design refinement stage.

The non-uniform pressure generated in the volute generally are propagating upstream. As a result, outlet conditions of rotaing impeller are changed and the performance degrades. The major object of this research is to develop the numerical method which can calculate the effects of impeller and volute flow field interactions. Under the assumption of steady three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow, the time averaged N-S equations involving $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model was solved by the F.V.M. To verify the computational method, the calculations are compared with experimental results published in literature and show satisfactory agreement with them, The three-dimensional flow characteristics within the volute of a centrifugal fan at design and off-design operating points have also been studied.
