패러디를 통한 영시 교육 방법의 모색: 『그의 수줍은 연인에게』의 개작시들을 중심으로

        조희정 한국중앙영어영문학회 2016 영어영문학연구 Vol.58 No.3

This paper aims at exploring possibilities of using parody texts in the English poetry course, focusing on three poems that revise or comment on Andrew Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress.” As parody activates a re-evaluation of the original text and functions as double- voiced discourse, using parody in the classroom is an effective method to engage the students in discussions that compare and contrast a parody text to the original text. Richard Wilbur’s “A Late Aubade,” Diane Ackerman’s “A Fine, A Private Place,” and Peter DeVeries’ “To His Importunate Mistress” address important issues such as time, gender roles, sexual experience, and materialism. Through in-depth class discussions of these three poems in relation to Marvell’s original text, the students are expected to develop critical thinking ability as well as accurate reading habits. The students get to approach Marvell’s poem from a variety of perspectives and analyze 20th- century society based on the comparison between 17th-century poem and modern poems reinventing it. Moreover, the teaching method utilizing various parody texts can encourage the students to produce their own parody texts and re-create dialogues between the text of the past and the current society.

에이츠 시에서 흰 새의 이미지: 현실과 이상의 통합을 향한 비전

        조희정,유미란 21세기영어영문학회 2008 영어영문학21 Vol.21 No.1

This paper aims at investigating the ways in which Yeats develops the image of the “white bird” throughout his poetic career. While most critics claim that Yeats' early poetry tends to disregard reality and escape from it, some of his early poems already present a more mature artistic vision that attempts to unify reality and the ideal world. From the beginning of his poetic career, Yeats was deeply influenced by Blake's dialectical view of the world, which led him to explore the unity between two opposing entities. In “The White Birds,” Yeats portrays the birds as creatures that can mediate between the ocean and the sky. Instead of allowing the birds to fly away from the sordid world of reality, Yeats focuses on the birds' ties to “the foam of the sea.” Likewise, in “The Wild Swans at Coole,” the swans ceaselessly paddle in the cold, and their efforts are precisely what enables them to function as the symbol of continuity and perfection. One of Yeats' most successful late poems, “Coole Park and Ballylee, 1931,” appears to designate the swan as the emblem of idealistic purity, but this designation in turn admits the swan's continual return to the “darkening flood,” pointing ultimately to “the unity of being” that seeks a dynamic way of unifying the ideal vision with the real world.

『이자벨라』에 투영된 키츠의 현실 인식과 시 쓰기

        조희정,김부진 한국중앙영어영문학회 2011 영어영문학연구 Vol.53 No.3

This paper attempts to analyze John Keats’s Isabella, focusing mainly on the changes occurring in the perception of its heroine. Through such analysis, this paper aims at illuminating the ways in which the author’s own understanding of the contemporary reality as well as his ideas about poetic composition is projected in the text. Isabella, the tragic heroine in one of Keats’s early romances, simultaneously embodies the poet’s own problems and dilemmas in a rather vicarious way. Before undergoing the transformation of perception after the traumatic loss of her beloved, Isabella appears to remain in the isolated realm of private feelings. While the idyllic love story of Isabella and Lorenzo certainly provides a critique of materialistic capitalism that dominates the outside world surrounding them, the lovers lack a clear understanding of reality, completely immersed in their feelings for each other. The fragile nature of the lovers’ insulated world points to the incompetence of the aesthetic in resisting the increasingly capitalistic society of the early 19th century. In contrast, Isabella experiences an extremely painful transformation of perception after Lorenzo’s murder by her materialistic brothers. Isabella performs the ritual of severing the head of her dead lover from his body, simultaneously separating herself from the naive, innocence domain of the past romance. After this ritual, she strives at a creative endeavor of growing the basil pot that nurtures itself with the nutrients of Lorenzo’s rotten head hidden underneath. Isabella’s act of converting the gruesome remains of the past into the regenerative growth of a new life mirrors Keats’s own creative attempt to transform reality through poetic imagination. Although Isabella’s pot of basil gets violently snatched from her, the tragic love story survives long after her death and succeeds in reaching many people’s hearts. Likewise, Keats expresses his longing for posthumous fame, despite his fear of hostile contemporary critics who often snub and ignore his poetical works.
