One of a unique technique in manipulating a multifunctional composite is demonstrated in this study. An electric field is applied to a liquid suspension in order to align the inclusions along with the direction electric field. This is called FAiMTa(Field Aided Micro Tailoring). It makes orthotropic polymer composites by arranging the micro and/or nano size particle inclusions in chain-line formation. Several kinds of particles such as Al2O3, graphite, CNT(Carbon Nano Tube), W(Tungsten) are tested to verify the effectiveness of the FAiMTa. The particles redistributed in an epoxy suspension and their coupons show that mechanical and thermal properties of orthotropic and random composites containing those particles depend on the trend of particles’ alignment. The micro-images of the functional composite from FAiMTa have been captures and their physical properties demonstrate their wide-range and state-of-the-art application for advanced multifunctional composites.

The recent industrial application requires technical methods to get the cutting fluid droplet surfaces in particular from the viewpoint of topography and micro texture. To characterize the surface topography of droplet, the combination of the confocal laser scanning microscope(CLSM) and wavelet filtering is well suited for obtaining the droplet geometry encountered in tribological research. This technique indicates a better agreement in obtaining an appropriate droplet surface obtained by the CLSM over a detail range of surface accuracy (resolution: 2㎛). And the results allow an excellent accuracy in a measurement of a droplet surface. The combination of extended focal depth measurement configured and multi-scale wavelet filtering has proven that it can construct a droplet surface in a successive and accurate way. A multi-scale approach of wavelet filtering was developed based on the decomposition and reconstruction of droplet surface by 20 wavelet transform using db9(a mother wavelet of daubechies). Also this technique can be extended to characterize the quantification of droplet properties and other field in a wide range of scales. Finally this method is verified to be a better droplet surface modeling in a micro scale arising in a mist machining.

The geometry of a crater wear of multi-layer coated tools after machining has been configured by using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) and the Wavelet-based filtering technique. CLSM can be well suited to construct the three-dimensional crater wear on the rake surfaces of tips. However, The raw data of CLSM must be filtered due to the electronic and imaging noise. So the Wavelet-based filtering algorithm is necessary to decouple the shape features at macro and micro scales so as to realize accurate crater wear topography analysis. The crater wear patterns filtered enable us to see the wear shape in order to study the tool wear evolution. The results show that the technique by combining the CLSM and Wavelet-based filtering is an excellent one to obtain the geometries of worn tool rake surfaces over a wide range of surface resolution.

There are many modelling methods using theoretical and experimental data. Recently, fractal interpolation methods have been widely used to estimate and analyze various data. Due to the chaotic nature of dynamic roundness profile data in roundness some desirable method must be used for the analysis which is natural to time series data. Fractal analysis used in this paper is within the scope of the fractal interpolation and fractal dimension. Also, two methods for computing the fractal dimension has been introduced which can obtain the dimension of typical dynamic roundness profile data according to the number of data points in which the fixed data are generally lower than 200 data points. This fractal analysis result shows a possible prediction of roundness profile that has some different roundness profile in round shape operation.

It is necessary to develope the functional finger prosthesis with multi-axis joints which is used for pinching and griping. Also, to analyze the function of the thumb and index finger having an important role in the function of the finger prosthesis is essential too. Nowadays the finger prostheses including the electronic prosthesis is used to pinch a simple product. However it does not satisfy the requirement of various functions of the disabled. There are several robot hands with many degree of freedom, although it is not light weighted and minimum volume. A study of the finger prosthesis is required to overcome the problem of weight and volume. The finger prosthesis developed in this study can flex up to about 90° in the metacarpal phalangeal joint and the proximal inter phalangeal joint and the distal inter phalangeal joint which can't be achieved the grip motion before was developed. The weight of the prosthesis is optimized to minimize and this developed prosthesis can be used conveniently.
