The present research addresses the effects of direct gaze and public self-consciousness on impression formation. Specifically, we investigated whether direct gaze changes the extent to which participants perceive the target persons as warm upon seeing their face. In the experimental condition, a series of staring eye images were presented to participants whereas in the controlled condition, a series of closed eye images were presented. We also explored how public self-consciousness influences the impression of warmth. Results showed that regardless of individual differences in public self-consciousness, participants uniformly perceived the target persons as rather cold when exposed to staring eyes. On the contrary, when closed eye images were presented, the participants with low public self-consciousness formed warmer impression of the targets in comparison to those with high public self-consciousness. The implications of these findings for excessive exposures to staring eyes are discussed.
