For the investigation of medicinal resources in Hydrocotyle species, the studies were conducted to evaluate the pharmaco-constituents in Hydrocotyle japonica MAKINO (Umbelliferae), which is used as folk medicine in Korea. From the methyl alcohol extract of the whole plant, isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-galactoside (C22H22012.1/3H20, bright yellow needle crystal, mp 247-248oC, [alpha]D28o=52.27o in pyridine), one of three flavonol substances in extrat, was isolated and identified by physicochemical properties and spectroscopic evidences (UV, IR, NMR and MS etc.,) in comparison with authentic sample. This flavonoid was appeared from Hydrocotyle japonica MAKINO through phytochenical approaches at the outset.

The extract of Mawhgun-tang at oral doses of 200 and 400 ㎎/㎏ showed remarkable inhibition of 42.5% and 45.0%, respectively, on the carrageenin edema in rat paw. In case of combined oral administration of the extract at each dose of 100, 200 and 400㎎/㎏ with 100㎎/㎏ of aspirin, the inhibitions were 70.5%, 83.6% and 80.7%, respectively. These results showed the remarkable effects as compared with those of aspirin which showed 50.3% and 69.4% of inhibition at doses of 100 and 200 ㎎/㎏, respectively. On the other hand, on the writhing syndrome in mice induced by 0.7% acetic acid solution, the oral administration of the extract showed remarkable inhibition of 18.5 and 47.7% at doses of 200 and 400㎎/㎏, respectively. In case of combined oral administration of the extract at each dose of 100, 200 and 400㎎/㎏ with 100㎎/㎏ of aspirin, the inhibition percentages of writhing syndromes were 66.6, 72.3 and 80.8, respectively, whereas the inhibition at doses of 100 and 200㎎/㎏ of aspirin showed 59.9 and 69.5%, respectively.

Seven phenolic compounds were isolated from the leaves of Spiraea salicifolia. Their structures were characterized as cinnamic acid, ${\rho}-hydroxy$ cinnamic acid, ${\rho}-methoxy$ cinnamic acid, $1-O-coumaroyl-{\beta}-D-glucopyranose$, $1-O-caffeoyl-{\beta}-D-glucopyranose$, hyperoside and quercetin $3-O-(6'-O-{\alpha}-L-arbinopyranosyl)-{\beta}-D-galactopyranoside$ by chemical and spectroscopic evidence.

A new method for quantitative determination of icariin in Epimedii Herba by high performance liquid chromatography was established. A reversed-phase system with a μBondapak C<sub>18</sub> column using methanol in water (15% to 70%, gradient elution) as a mobile phase was developed. Icariin and spinosin as an internal reference were detested at 350 ㎚ and the analysis was successfully carried out within 30 min.

Three flavonoids were isolated from Epimedium koreanum and identified as quercetin(1), anhydroicaritin-3-O-α-rhamnoside(2) and icariin(3) by spectroscopic methods. The former two compounds are the first isolation from this plant.
슬관절의 과굴곡 상태에서 좌상 후 발생한 급성 슬개골하 지방괴의 분리 손상

슬개골하 지방괴는 슬관절 전방 부위에 위치한 세 가지의 지방괴 중 하나로 슬개골하 지방괴의 손상이 비교적 흔하며, 원인은 주로 수술에 인한 의인성 손상 및 충돌 등에 의한 반복적인 미세 외상 등으로 알려져 있다. 저자들은 국내 및 국외에 보고된 적이 없는 슬관절의 과굴곡 상태로 전면부에 좌상을 입은 후 발생한 슬개골하 지방괴의 급성 분리 손상을 자기공명영상을 통해 확인하였고, 이를 보존적으로 치료하여 완치된 1예를 경험하였기에 보고하는 바이다. The infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) is one of three fat pads located about the anterior knee. Injury in this region is relatively common. Damage to the IPFP is caused mostly by an iatrogenic injury from a surgical procedure or repeated small collision trauma. The authors experienced a case of an IPFP injury, that has not been reported in the domestic or international literature. In this case, acute IPFP separation followed by a contusion at the anterior aspect of knee in the kneeling position, confirmed using magnetic resonance imaging. The patient was fully recovered with conservative treatment.

For the investigation of bioactive natural products with hypoglycemic effect, we have evaluated various extracts of Pulsatillae Radix(Ranunculaceae), which has been used in traditional medicine for hematochezia due to intense evil heat, malaria, chills and fever, epistaxis and internal hemorrhoids. The ethylacetate extract of the radix of this plant was found to show a significant hypoglycemic effect on alloxan diabetogenic mice. Using bioactivity-guided chromatographic purification of the ethylacetate extract, hypoglycemic constituent: 2beta, 3beta, 14alpha, 20,22R, 25-hexahydroxy-cholest-7-en-6-one was isolated and structurally identified by physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences.

For the investigation of bioactive natural products with analgesic activity, we have evaluated various extracts of Saururi Herba (Saururaceae), which has been used in traditional medicine for edema, beriberi, jaundice, turbid urine, carbuncle and furuncle. The diethylether extract of this plant was found to show a significant analgesic effect on writhing syndrome in mice. Using bioactivity-guided separation of the diethylether extract, analgesic constituent, (8S, 8`R, 7R, 6`R)-2`-oxo-4,5: 4`,5`-bis(methylenedioxy)-delta1,3,5,3`-8.8`, 7.6`, 2.O.5`-neolignan(sauchinone) was isolated and structurally identified by physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences. This compound has good analgesic activity with lower toxicity, as compared to other antipyretic-analgesic drug(acetaminophen).
