        The article problematizes a prevailing assumption in international security literature that the lack of security equals insecurity. Instead, this article adopts a postmodern view that international insecurity can also be created by excessive security. This article aims to investigate how Japan’s continuous attempts at constitutional reform and rearmament can be problematic in terms of regional security in Northeast Asia. Thus, immunological and neurological perceptions of ‘security’ are introduced to highlight features of contemporary international security in the 21st century that are distinct from the Cold War period. Based on neurological insight, it is argued that Japan’s rush towards constitutional reform can be perceived as a political undertaking to produce a status change rather than to maintain a status quo. Eventually, it would unnecessarily provoke Japan’s neighbours in the region by engendering excessive security, which may undermine the stability in Northeast Asia.

        Internet service has now become available to anyone who has a personal computer and as more computer networks have been built. One can take advantages of the internet anywhere and anytime. Many web sites have been built according to personal needs, for example, personal homepages, on-line newspapers, search sites etc. Besides, many web users who are attracted by engineering calculation have studied to have the calculation and cost estimate done in the web based environment. So in this study, we have developed a design and cost estimation tool for pressure vessels in the web based environment by using javascript, ASP (Active Server Pages) and MS-SQL (Structured Query Language) database. The tool is based on the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section Ⅷ Div 1. The execution of engineering calculations is done with javascript. The performance of this program has been verified by both manual calculation and BASIC program. In the near future, many web applications for engineering calculation in the web based environment will become popular.

        다낭성 난소 증후군 환자에서 비만군과 비비만군에서의 인슐린 저항성

        This study was designed to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance and obesity in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCO). Twenty-two women with PCO, of whom thirteen were non-obese with body mass index(BMI, kg/$m^2$) of <25 and nine were obese with BMI${\geq}$25 were studied. Eight non-obese control women and seven obese control women were studied. Serum concentrations of testosterone, lutenizing hormone(LH)/follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) ratio, and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) were found to be significantly higher(P<0.05) in PCO women compared with control women, which clearly is not related to obesity. Serum glucose, insulin, and C-peptide levels were measured during a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT). Non-obese and obese women with PCO both(P<0.05) compared with control women demonstrated significant hyperinsulinemia after OGTT. The degree of hyperinsulinemia was found to be significantly higher in the obese women with PCO compared with the non-obese women with PCO. We concluded that obesity may contribute to hyperinsulinemia, however may not playa central role in the pathogenesis of PCO.

        한국 재래닭의 주령별 각 조직의 텔로미어 함량과 텔로머레이스 활성도 분석

        텔로미어는 염색체를 보호하고 세포 분열의 안정성에 주된 작용을 하며 세포의 사멸, 노화 및 암의 발생과 직접적 관련이 있다고 알려져 있다. 최근 텔로미어의 길이와 텔로머레이스의 활성에 대한 많은 연구들은 광범위하게 진행되어 왔지만 닭에서는 매우 제한적으로 연구되어왔다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 한국 재래닭에서 발육, 성장 및 노화 단계별 간, 뇌, 심장, 신장, 정소 및 백혈구 세포에 대한 텔로미어의 양적 분포와 텔로머레이스 활성도를 분석 고찰하고자 하였다. 텔로미어의 함량 분석은 telomeric DNA probe 를 이용하여 Q-FISH 법으로 수행하였고, 텔로머레이스 활성도 분석은 TRAP 방법을 이용하였다. 분석 결과, 닭 염색체상 텔로미어는 모든 염색체 양 말단부에 나타나며 특히 1, 2 및 3 번 염색체에서는 양 말단 외 interstitial telomeric DNA 가 존재하였다. 닭의 조직별 세포들의 telomeric cDNA 함량을 분석한 결과 성장 및 노화가 진행됨에 따라 대부분의 세포들에서 텔로미어 함유율이 유의적으로 감소하였고, 조직 간 텔로미어 함유율 에서도 많은 차이를 보였는데 특히 증식성 세포인 정소 내 세포들이 다른 비 증식성 세포들에 비해 월등히 높게 나타났다. 텔로머레이스 활성도는 간, 뇌, 심장 등 대부분의 조직에서 성장 및 노화가 진행됨에 따라 활성이 감소되거나 없어지나 생식선 조직인 정소세포는 연령과 무관하게 지속적으로 높은 활성을 나타내었다. 이상의 결과로부터 닭의 조직별 세포 분화 및 증식성 특이성과 텔로미어의 함량 및 텔로머레이스 활성도 간에는 매우 밀접한 관련이 있으며, 텔로머레이스 활성도와 텔로미어 함유율 간에 매우 높은 상관이 있었다. Telomeres are essential for chromosome stability and are related with cell senescence, apoptosis and cancer. Even though telomere length and telomerase activity have been studied extensively, very little is known to analyze the telomere dynamics in chicken cells. This study was carried out to analyze the telomere distribution and telomerase activity of Korean Native Chicken cells along with aging. The cells were collected from brain, heart, liver, kidney and germinal tissues during physiological stages. Telomere distribution was analyzed by Quantitative-Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (Q-FISH) techniques using the chicken telomeric DNA probe. Telomerase activity was performed by Telomeric Repeat Amplification Protocol (TRAP) assay. In results, the telomeres of chicken were found at the ends of all chromosomes with the interstitial telomeres on chromosomes 1, 2 and 3. The amount of telomeres on chicken cells was decreased along with aging in most tissues. Furthermore, the telomere quantity was significantly different among tissues. The relative amount of telomeres in proliferous cells such as testis cells had much more than those of liver, brain, heart, blood and kidney cells. The telomerase activity was down-regulated in cells of brain, heart and liver tissues. Whereas gonadal cells showed a constitutive activity of telomerase during all stage of life. In conclusions, the telomere quantity and telomerase activity in chicken are closely relate to cell proliferation and tissue specificity during developmental stages and aging. There is also closely correlated between the amounts of telomeric DNA and telomerase activity in chicken tissues.

      • 하중 방향에 따른 관상동맥용 스텐트의 유연성 해석

        In clinical use, coronary stents keep coronary arteries open after expansion with a balloon catheter and prevent the expanded artery from collapsing. Coronary stents are positioned in artery by catheter with a balloon along a guide wire to the lesion site. Flexibility is one of important ability for delivery. In this paper, Palmaz-Schatz stent and Tenax complete stent were selected because these are the most representative of tubular stents. Finite element analyses for the stent system were performed using ABAQUS/Standard code. The present study estimated the flexibility of coronary stents due to loading directions. Moreover the present paper suggests a numerical method to test the flexibility of stents. In conclusion this paper shows how the finite element analysis can be effectively organized in the stent development.

      • 일부농촌지역 손상 및 중독발생의 역학적특성

        The mortality and morbidity caused by injury and poisoning has been a major public health problem in Korea. this study was carried out to get information indispensable in developing prevention srategies peculiar to Korean rural area. In this study 444 people of 14 households, who are living in five rural villages of Chooncheon City, Kang-Won Province, were interviewed in accordance with structured questionaire by MPH students and teaching staff of School of Public Health SNU during the field training course of 1997 academic year. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The age-standardized annual incidence rates of injury and poisoning per 100 persons surveyed were 19.8 in males and 14.1 in females. The difference between sex was not statistically significant. The age specific incidence rate generally revealed that the incidence increased as age advanced, suggesting vulnerability of aging to the accident. 2. The incidence rates of injuries and poisoning were higher among the people living in traditional Korean-style house than those living in others(a Westen-style house), the accident occurred more frequently in kitchen and toilet than other places within the house, and the differences in the incidence were statistically significant. 3. The places where most of injuries and poisonings occurred were road and cultivating area(27.5% each) among males, and cultivating area(42.5%), indoor and road(15.7% each) among females. 4. The occurrence of the injuries and poisoning were clustered in intensive farming season in males, whereas farmong season and winter in females. The injury and poisoning occurred more frequently in the afternoons of the day although the clustering of thd accidents by time showed different pattern by sex and type. 5. The laceration and stab wound were the most frequent nature of injuries in both males and females. On the other hand abrasion, organ damage and amputation were more frequent among males but concussion and fracture were more frequent among females. 6. Incidence rates of injuries and poisoning by cause were higher in traffic accidents and farming among males, though falls among females. The cause specific incidence rate by age was high in traffic accidents for 10-2 year age group(62.5%), and in falls for 30-59 year age group and the aged peole older than 60 years. 8. In the management pattern, 36 percents of the injuries and poisonings wer self-treated and the 30 percents of those received medical care in hospitals and clinics, the medical expenditure being over 100,000 won in 25% of injured and the duration of the treatment over 2 weeks in 46%. The results obtained indicate that organized community effort is urgently required to prevent injuries and poidsonings in rural area.

        한국재래돼지의 G-, C-, 및 NOR-banding

        Using the G-, C-, and NOR-banding techniques, a karyotyping for Korean native Pig was performed. Blood samples were collected from 50 male Korean Native Pigs that had been bred at the National Livestock Research Institute and then blood cells were prepared from in vitro cultures followed by karyotyping ; G-, C-, and NOR-banding patterns of metaphase chromosomes were analyzed. The karyotype of Korean Native Pig is 38, XX or XY which consists of 5 pairs of submetacentric chromosomes(Group Ⅰ), 2 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes with short p-arm(Group Ⅱ), 5 pairs of medium metacentric chromosomes(Group Ⅲ), 6 pairs of acrocentic chromosomes(Group Ⅳ) and metacentric X and Y sex chromosomes. On GTG-banding, the Korean Native Pig exhibited a typical and identical banding pattern in each homologous chromosomes. Overall chromosomal morphology and positions of typical landmarks of the Koreans Native Pig were virtually identical chromosomal morphology and positions of typical landmarks of the Korea Native Pig were virtually identical to those of Committee for the Standardized Karyotype of the Domestic Pig(CSKDP). However, numbers of G-bands of the Korean Native Pig chromosomes were more than those of CSKDP. In chromosomes 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and X, the Korean Native Pig exhibited more separated bands as compared with CSKDP. In C-banding patterns, although the quantity of heterochromatin was variable in each chromosome, most of the Korean Native Pig chromosomes had heterochromatic C-bands on centromeres. However, the heterochromatic C-band was constantly observed on the whole Y chromosome. In AgNOR staining, the NORs were located at centromeres on the chromosomes 8 and 10. The number of NORs per metaphase ranged from 2 to 4 giving a mean value of 2.13. The number of NORs wer distributed on all chromosome pair 10 but not on chromosome 8. The sizes of NORs were also differed between homologous chromosomes 8. Numbers of NORs of Korean Native Pig were significantly higher than those of Yorkshire. The pattern of pig NORs was polymorphic in breeds, individuals and cells, especially on chromosome 8.
