Background: Recently, the mitochondrial proapoptotic protein, apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), and its nucleartranslocation have been reported in caspase-independent neuronal apoptosis. However, it is not elucidated whetheroxidative signaling is involved in the nuclear translocation of AIF and subsequent caspase-independent apoptoticcell death. We investigated whether oxidative signaling induces nuclear translocation of AIF and subsequent caspase-independent apoptosis-associated DNA fragmentation after permanent focal cerebral ischemia (FCI).Methods: Adult male ICR mice were subjected to permanent FCI by intraluminal suture blockade of middle cerebralartery. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis were performed. Large-scale DNA fragmentationwas evaluated by pulse field gel electrophoresis and apoptotic cell death was quantified. Manganese tetrakis (4-benzoic acid) porphyrin (MnTBAP), which mimics mitochondrial superoxide dismutase, was used to determinewhether the production of reactive oxygen species is required for the induction in AIF translocation. R e s u l t s:Western blot analysis showed that the nuclear translocation of AIF occurred as early as 2 hours after permanentFCI. Immunostaining for AIF also confirmed early nuclear translocation of AIF after permanent FCI. Large-scaleDNA fragmentation was detected 8 hours after permanent FCI. MnTBAP-treatment attenuated AIF translocationand blocked large-scale DNA fragmentation. Caspase-3 activity was similarly inhibited between the pan-caspasei n h i b i t o r- and MnTBAP-treated mice, but the amount of apoptosis-associated DNA fragmentation in theMnTBAP-treated mice was less than in the pan-caspase inhibitor-treated mice (P〈0.001). In addition, infarctionvolume was also decreased by MnTBAP. Conclusions: These results suggest that reactive oxygen species inducethe caspase-independent nuclear translocation of AIF and subsequent apoptosis-associated DNA fragmentationafter permanent FCI.(Korean Journal of Stroke 2005;7(2): 214~223)

Lambl’s excrescences(LE) are small filiform or papillary fibroelastic tissue strands, which are commonly found on the surface of the aortic or mitral valves. LE have been reported as a possible cardiac source of cerebral embolism. We report two cases of cerebral infarction with LE, which were identified by transesophageal echocardiography.

Hashimoto encephalopathy shares common clinical features with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and must be regarded as a differential diagnosis because of its good prognosis. We report a case of Hashimoto encephalopathy, which had not been recognized before the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The electroclinical findings were compatible with probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and coexistence of Hashimoto thyroiditis was supported by high titers of anti-thyroid microsomal antibody and cytopathologic findings. Hashimoto encephalopathy was not improved, which was most likely due to the coexistence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Sleep-onset central sleep apnea is not uncommon phenomenon, and is usually regarded as a normal sleep pattern. Dysrhytymic breathing is frequently seen at sleep onset. Any process that leads to frequent sleep-wake transitions over the course of the night (such as insomnia) may increase the number of central apneas. Although the exact mechanism is still unclear, rapid loss of the wakefulness drive to breathe and unstable carbon dioxide set point results in central apnea/hypopnea leading to hypercapnia which induces subsequent hyperventilation secondary to arousals. If the following hypocapnia cross the apnea threshold, then central sleep apnea resumes. In this brief review, I will address the underlying physiology influencing sleep-onset central sleep apnea and its clinical implications

Unit-water content is an element directly related to durability and unit-water content of concrete used at construction site has a great effect on the durability of construction structure. Many methods are being discussed for more convenient and accurate measurements of unit-water content. Therefore, an experimental study was conducted on the prediction of unit-water content using ultrasonic equipment. Depending on the amount of cement in cement paste, the speed of ultrasonic waves varies and the experiment will be carried out using the same reception sensitivity in the future.

Therefore, high frequency moisture sensor was used for quick and high measurement, and unit-water content of mortar was evaluated through machine running and deep running based on measurement big data.

The unit-water content of concrete is one of the important factors in determining the quality of concrete and is directly related to the durability of the construction structure, and the current method of measuring the unit-water content of concrete is applied by the Air Meta Act and the Electrostatic Capacity Act. However, there are complex and time-consuming problems with measurement methods. Therefore, high frequency moisture sensor was used for quick and high measurement, and unit-water content of mortar was evaluated through machine running and deep running based on measurement big data. The multi-input deep learning model is as accurate as 24.25% higher than the OLS linear regression model, which shows that deep learning can more effectively identify the nonlinear relationship between high-frequency moisture sensor data and unit quantity than linear regression.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelination disease caused by opportunistic infection of the ubiquitous, usually nonpathogenic neurotropic papovavirus (JC virus). The virus infects and destroys myelin-producing oligodendrocytes, thereby causing patchy areas of demyelination in the cerebral white matter. It is exclusively a disease of immunosuppressed individuals. We report a case of an immunocompetent child patient with pathologically-proven PML and with a survival over 3 years after diagnosis. Serial follow up of neuroimaging study including brain MRI, MRS, SPECT and PET was obtained.
