This paper covers the sensitivity of cornering stiffness through suspension quasi-static parameters by experimental methods. Cornering stiffness is defined as an important parameter deciding vehicle stability and steering response. In this study, the physical change by suspension parts such as suspension bushings, spring, anti roll bar, rim width and body stiffness was analyzed in the way of handling and steering response. For this analysis, SPMD tests were performed for quasi-static characteristics and ‘J-turn’ tests were performed for dynamic characteristics. Cornering stiffness was related to parameters such as lateral stiffness, compliance steer, roll stiffness and body stiffness especially on rear axle. In addition, the direction for better handling and direct steering response was obtained by experiments. However, in certain tests, parts increasing cornering stiffness had negative effects on roll and yaw damping. Therefore, the further study will be needed to clarify influence on various handling and ride factors as well as to expand into theoretical research.
