Driving resistance is a very important factor for the vehicle performance test such as the fuel economy test in the chassis dynamometer. The test principle for driving resistance of the US EPA is similar to that of EU ECE, but EU ECE test has a little more different conditions in terms of considering highest reference speed(135 ㎞/h), vehicle weight and selected tires. This study explores how much fuel economy is related with vehicle driving resistance which are measured by testing on both US EPA and EU ECE. All test vehicles on two drive cycles(FTP-75 and HWFET) are able to meet the tolerance(15%) of compared driving resistances on the regulation except for HWFET result of Vehicle B, and the driving resistances on EU ECE are more severe than those on US EPA. The results show that the more driving resistance a vehicle has, the worst fuel economy it has.

The fuel economy of vehicles is the main concern for policy makers, vehicle manufacturers and consumers. Understanding the fuel economy of vehicles has important implications for fuel economy, greenhouse gas emissions and consumer information policies. Consumers need more fuel economy information to make informed decisions about their vehicle usage. This study seeks to satisfy our curiosity on whether fuel economy is closely related with cumulative mileage. The fuel economy data based on four different mileage conditions are measured by testing eight vehicles on two drive cycles (FTP-75 and HWFET) in accordance with the government test method to analyze and compare relationships between mileage and fuel economy. Statistical approaches with one-way ANOVA and paired t-test are used to verify causality between cumulative mileage and fuel economy. There is no mileage effect on vehicle fuel economy as shown in the one-way ANOVA results. The paired t-test analysis shows that fuel economy is minimally affected by cumulative mileage. However, it is difficult to ascertain if cumulative mileage can cause negative effects on fuel economy.

The European Union (EU) has enacted real driving emissions regulations for gaseous substances in Lightduty vehicles since 2017. In Korea, however, new regulations about WLTC and RDE were postponed. So, it is necessary to revise RDE regulations. Furthermore, fuel consumption must be measured at the same time as emissions to prevent defeat devices. Therefore, this study was carried out to analyze the characteristics of RDE evaluation criteria for fuel economy measurement of light-duty diesel vehicles. In order to do this research, we compared the verification with the measured value of the chassis dynamometer using the official PEMS(AVL).
