Since the fuel economy of an excavator will be regulated in near future, it is required to study measures to reduce fuel consumption. Currently, idle stop technology is widely used in vehicles worldwide, however, its effect in an excavator in real work sites has hardly been studied. In this work, In order to study the effect of idle stop in an excavator at real work sites, fuel consumptions of both engine idling and starting are experimentally measured. Using the on board fuel meter built in this work, the fuel consumption of an excavator in real work sites is investigated. This work concludes that, throughout six real work sites, an enhancement of fuel economy up to 5.5% is estimated using the fuel consumptions of engine idle and starting measured in this work.

In order to cope with the regulated fuel economy in near future for construction machines including excavators, idle stop technology has a potential to be implemented as one of measures to save fuel consumption. Since it has been reported that, in real work sites, excavators idle for significant amount of time between each motion, idle stop technology, which has been widely used for vehicles, is capable of reducing fuel consumption during idling. This study aims to measure fuel consumption of engine idling in an excavator and analyze the amount fuel saving by stopping engine during idle. This work shows that fuel consumption could be reduced up to 13.7% owing to engine stop during idle of a typical excavator used in domestic work site.
