Clinical Neuroanatomy and Neurotransmitter-Mediated Regulation of Penile Erection
2014 International Neurourology Journal Vol.18 No.2
Erectile dysfunction (ED) has an adverse impact on men’s quality of life. Penile erection, which is regulated by nerves that are innervatedinto the erectile tissue, can be affected by functional or anatomical trauma of the perineal region, including specificstructures of the penis, causing ED. Penile erection is neurologically controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Therefore, it isof utmost importance to understand the neurogenic structure of the erectile tissue and the types of neurotransmitters involvedin the penile erection process. Here, we highlight the basic clinical anatomy and erectile function of the penis. Understandingthe clinical connotation of the relationship between penile erectile structure and function may provide fresh insights for identifyingthe main mechanisms involved in ED and help develop surgical techniques for the treatment of ED.

2020 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.24 No.4
Background and Objectives: Autophagy is known to be associated with pathogen infection. However, the expression of autophagy-related proteins has not been studied in chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma (COM) or with cholesteatoma (CholeOM). This study aimed to determine whether there is a difference between COM and CholeOM in autophagy-related gene mRNA expression. Subjects and Methods: For 47 patients with chronic otitis media, the inflammatory tissues were classified into granulation tissue (COM) or cholesteatoma (CholeOM) according to biopsy results. Results: PI3K mRNA expression (COM vs. CholeOM, mean±SD, 0.009±0.010 vs. 0.003±0.004; p=0.004) was lower, whereas Beclin-1 mRNA expression (0.089 ± 0.107 vs. 0.176 ± 0.163; p=0.034) was higher in the CholeOM group. Expression of PI3K mRNA in the CholeOM group was lower than that in the COM subgroups with presence of bacteria (0.022±0.019 vs. 0.001±0.001; p=0.001), otorrhea (0.049±0.068 vs. 0.003±0.004; p=0.004), and hearing loss over 40 dB (0.083±0.130 vs. 0.003±0.004; p=0.005). Conclusions: The data suggested that different autophagy proteins play important roles in chronic otitis media according to the presence or absence of cholesteatoma.

2022 The Korean Journal of Malacology Vol.38 No.3
The PANM database (Protostome DB) is a public database platform established in 2015 for the efficient annotation of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data arising from genome sequencing projects involving the Invertebrates (include Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Nematoda). The database has been updated on a routine basis to further increase the accuracy and speed of NGS data annotation. In PANM DB version 5.0 release a total of 21,276,123 protein sequences belonging to the Protostomes have been made available (registered sequences of NCBI). The PANM DB version 5.0 contains about 4% of the total NCBI-nr data shortening the time for overall annotation of large-scale NGS data of the Protostomes. PANM DB version 5.0 can be downloaded for free from http://panm.sch.ac.kr/ for annotation based on local BLAST analysis.
Clinical and Functional Anatomy of the Urethral Sphincter
2012 International Neurourology Journal Vol.16 No.3
Continence and micturition involve urethral closure. Especially, insufficient strength of the pelvic floor muscles including the urethral sphincter muscles causes urinary incontinence (UI). Thus, it is most important to understand the main mechanism causing UI and the relationship of UI with the urethral sphincter. Functionally and anatomically, the urethral sphincter is made up of the internal and the external sphincter. We highlight the basic and clinical anatomy of the internal and the external sphincter and their clinical meaning. Understanding these relationships may provide a novel view in identifying the main mechanism causing UI and surgical techniques for UI.

2021 The Korean Journal of Malacology Vol.37 No.2
Clithon retropictus is a small gastropod belonging to Neritidae that lives in gravel areas of the brackish water zone. Due to these limited habitat conditions and indiscriminate coastal development, it has been designated as a second-class endangered species since 2005. Although its continued interest is low, it is important to investigate the endangered species-specific characterization and analysis of its genetic information. As of June 2021, genetic information of C. retropictus registered in the NCBI was 78 cases, and related studies are also insufficient. In addition, it has not yet been studied the identification and functional characterization of MT gene, which plays a critical role in controlling metal toxicity and oxidative stress, in C. retropictus. In this context, we analyzed basic structure and specific domains of MT sequence of C. retropictus (CrMT) and the taxonomic location of CrMT with its othologs registered in NCBI. As a result, CrMT gene containing with mollusca-specific MT pattern was identified in C. retropictus. In addition, phylogenetic analysis through the maximum-likelihood method indicates that C. retropictus was closely related to the order Lepetelida inhabiting the sea. Taken together, our results may support basic information of endangered species living in brackish water zone.

2020 The Korean Journal of Malacology Vol.36 No.2
Metallothionein (MT) is a metal-binding protein with a small molecular weight that can be induced by factors such as metal ions and chemicals, and is widely present in various organisms. The high cysteine content of MT contributes to the regulation of intracellular metal concentration, detoxification of heavy metals, and it may be induced due to the environment exposed to heavy metals or oxidation stress. MT has been consistently studied as a taxonomic biomarker for various species, including mollusks. Aegista quelpartensis, a native species of Korea, has habitat in Jeju and Jindo island. DNAseq and transcriptome information is registered with NCBI's SRA, but no molecular phylogenetic studies have been conducted. RNA sequencing was performed using Illumina Hiseq 2500 to find the genetic information of A. quelpartensis. The unigene obtained through the de novo assembly was annotated according to the PANM database using the BLAST program, and the MT sequence consisting of 288 bp coding region and 96 amino acid residues was extracted. The bioinformatic analysis verified that A. quelpartensis was grouped in the Stylommatophora clad using the ClustalX and MEGA7 programs. This study confirmed the phylogenetic location of A. quelpartensis and the MT gene is sufficient gene that can be used in phylogenetic studies on Mollusca.

Demands for clean steel and ultra-low carbon steel are increasing year by year. To meet the demands RH vacuum degasser used for manuafacturing high clean ULC steel, it is very important to know the relationship between circulation energy in the RH reactor and steels cleanness during manufacturing ULC steel. The change of energy dissipation rate in the RH reactor and the steel cleanness by process condition have been investigated. It was found that the energy dissipation rate for decarburization period is four times as large as that for circulation period after deoxidation. The increasing energy dissipation rate at RH treatment plays the main role in the decreasing of total oxygen at treatment end. In order to step up the steel cleanness during ULC steel manufacturing in the RH degasser, it is effective to increase energy dissipation rate after deoxidation.
Association Between High Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio and Delayed Recovery From Bell’s Palsy
2019 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.12 No.3
Objectives. Factors predictive of the severity of and recovery from Bell’s palsy remain unclear. This study evaluated the association between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the severity of and recovery from Bell’s palsy. Methods. This retrospective study included 51 patients who were hospitalized with Bell’s palsy from 2015 to 2017. Degree of paralysis was assessed by House-Brackmann (H-B) grade. Patients with H-B grades 2–4 were classified as having mild to moderate palsy and patients with H-B grade 5 or 6 were classified as having severe palsy. Patients were evaluated for obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and blood tests were performed to determine NLR and platelet to lymphocyte ratio. Patients were treated with steroids and antiviral agents. H-B grade was assessed 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after treatment. Results. NLR was significantly higher in patients with severe than with mild to moderate palsy (P=0.048). Recovery time was significantly longer in patients with high NLR than low NLR (P=0.045). Conclusion. Higher NLR in patients with Bell’s palsy was associated with longer recovery time. NLR may be prognostic of recovery time in patients with Bell’s palsy.

Korea is a significant contributor to the global catch and trade of Cephalopods. However, most of the imported cephalopods do not have accurate Korean names, leading to confusion and deception among consumers. To protect consumers and prevent such confusion, a scientific Korean naming system was established through a conducted study. The study resulted in the creation of a taxonomic list that includes 412 species of cephalopods eligible for import, each with a Korean name. The Octopodidae family had the highest number of species with 71, followed by the Sepiidae family with 65 species, the Loliginidae family with 47 species, and the Ommastrephidae family with 22 species.
