This study was conducted to study the effect of hatching time, and body measurements on the body weight by age. The shank length has major effect on the body weight at 4 weeks of age and the keel length had for the body weight at 6 and 8 weeks of age. Since the R² values of the models were highest when the shank length, keel length and the hatching time were considered to the body weight at 6 weeks of age or when the shank length and keel length were considered, broiler breeders could be selected as early as 6 weeks of age.
육용계의 체중과 복강지방에 대한 유전력과 유전상관 추정에 관한 연구

This study was designed to estimate the heritabilities and genetic correlations of body weight, carcass weight, abdominal fat, neck, gizzard, liver, heart, shank length and keel length in broiler. Heritability estimates of body weight at 6, 8 and 10 weeks of age were 0.45, 0.41 and 0.28, respectively, and abdominal fat at 6, 8 and 10 weeks of age were 0.16, 0.52 and 0.30, respectively. Genetic correlations were estimated between abdominal fat and the correlated traits. Based on the genetic correlations, shank length and keel length might be used selection criteria for decrease abdominal fat in broiler breed.
한우의 ACADS 유전자내의 SNP 탐색 및 경제형질과의 연관성 분석

The acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, C-2 to C-3 short chain (ACADS) gene is known to be related with fat metabolism, especially coverts the fat to the energy sources in cattle. In human, the mutations in this gene cause SCAD deficiency, which is one of the fatty acid metabolism disorders. The ACADS gene is located on bovine chromosome 17. The objective of this study was to identify SNPs in Hanwoo ACADS gene and identify the relationships with economic traits. In this study, two SNPs, T1570G SNP in exon 2 and G13917A SNP in exon 4, were observed. Moreover, in the coding region, 2 missense mutations, T (Cys) → G (Trp) mutation at 1570 bp and G (Arg) → A (Gln) mutation at 13917 bp, were observed. These mutations were subjected to the PCR-RFLP for typing 198 Hanwoo animals. The observed genotype frequency for T1570G was 0.135 (TT), 0.860 (TG) and 0.005 (GG), respectively. Also, 0.900 (GG) and 0.100 (GA) were observed for the G13917A mutation. The association of these SNPs with four economic traits, CW (Carcass Weight), BF (Backfat Thickness), LMA (Longissimus Muscle Area), MS (Marbling Score), were also observed. The results indicated that no significant results were observed in all four traits (P>0.05). This might indicate that further studies are ultimately needed to use the SNPs in ACADS gene in lager populations for effectively used for the marker assisted selection.

동물조직에서 실시간 유전자 추출을 위한 소형기기의 설계 및 제작

Here, we present a new method and equipment for the extraction of DNA from animal tissues. Our equipment has been designed based on a conventional biochemical analysis system and consists of three major parts; sampling, flow-centrifugation and DNA filtration part. The screw of the sampling part can collect a small piece of tissues from a lump of meat. The piece of meat was subjected to a specially designed tube to extract DNA. The lysed cells mixture were then loaded to the flow-centrifuge part. After the DNA filtration, the elution buffer and cylinder pressure could produce the clean DNA. It is expected in near future that our equipment will help identify the Korean cattle as well as genetically modified organisms.
