Initial hull form of 10 G/T and 40 knots class coastal patrol boat is newly developed. The resistance performances are experimentally and numerically investigated by model test and CFD technique. The effect of initial trim and a fin attached at hull side are studied together. Wave patterns are observed to make clear the relation between the performance and the wave characteristics. It can be found that the initial trim plays a role in increasing the resistance performance above a certain velocity, and the CFD technique can be used at the initial design stage of a high-speed planning boats.

The resistance performances were studied for two 50-ft-class power yachts made at carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) with different hull form characteristics using model tests. The tests were carried out at a high-speed circulating water channel (CWC) for the 16-38 knot range. The total resistance, trim, and sinkage were measured, and the results were compared with wave patterns. The results showed that a chine position at the draft line had a strong effect on the planning performance and resistance performance in a certain velocity range.

This paper reports the hull form development and resistance performance of a 5-ton-class catamaran-type coastal fishing boat. The weight estimation and preliminary design were basically extracted from existing coastal fishing vessels. In addition, the resistance performance was investigated using a model test in a high-speed circulating water channel and was analyzed in comparison to an existing catamaran fishing vessel. As a result, the modified hull achieved an approximately 30% reduction in resistance compared to the previous hull. The stability or boarding sensitivity of the modified hull form was more stable or comfortable than the original hull form based on a trim and sinkage comparison between the two boats.

A 32-ft class leisure boat was newly developed using statistical analysis of actual ships. Resistance performances were investigated by testing models in a high-speed circulating water channel, and with the CFD method. The effects of a trim tab and of a fin attached at the hull side were studied together. Wave patterns were observed to clarify the relationship between resistance performance and wave characteristics. It was found that a trim tab and a side fin playa role in increasing resistance performance within a certain velocity range.

A 25ft class fishing leisure boat is developed, and the resistance performances are investigated by a model test in a high-speed circulating water channel. The design speed of the developed ship is 25 knots using a 150 ps outboard engine. A catamanan type hull form using a planing section is adopted considering the Froude number and large deck area. The effect of a center body attached on the bottom of the cross deck is studied under various conditions. Wave patterns are observed to make clear the relationship between the resistance performance and the wave characteristics. The results show that the shape of the center body and the position of the chine line can have a strong effect on the resistance performance in a certain velocity range.

This study investigated the sea trial performance of a wave piercing high speed planing hull (WPH). The bow shape of the boat is sharp, and it has no chine or spray strip like a normal planing boat. The skeg is attached to the bottom of the boat in the longitudinal direction from the bow to the stern. The speed performance was analyzed as the speed dropped in a wave, and the seakeeping performance was compared with that of a planing boat with a similar velocity coefficient by measuring the vertical acceleration of the bow in the wave. The turning circle was compared with Lewandowskis estimation for a planing boat. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that the velocity drop of the developed WPH was not large in a wave, and the vertical acceleration was greatly reduced compared with that of a normal planing boat. The turning circle was somewhat larger than the estimated results for a planing boat, but the overall tendency was the same.

A new wave-piercing-type high-speed planing boat without a chine was developed, and its basic performance was investigated in a model test, including the resistance, trim, and sinkage. The maximum speed of the developed ship was 35 knots. The hull form was developed by combining a VSV (very slender vessel) and TH (transonic hull), which have large deadrise angles at the bow. The main dimensions were estimated by a statistical approach using actual ship data. The effect of a side fin attached at the stern near the water line was investigated from a resistance point of view. It was found that the developed hull form showed the possibility of a new concept for a high-speed planing hull without a chine, and the side fin played an important role in increasing the resistance performance by controlling the trim and sinkage in the high-speed range.
