민족성과 현대성 개념을 적용한 음악 텍스트 분석 연구: 중국 작곡가 탄둔의 작품 <지도(地圖)>를 중심으로

연구목적 이 연구는 중국 현대 작곡가 중 가장 논쟁적이고 대표적인 인물인 탄둔의 작품 중 ‘동서양의 융합적 접근’을 대표하는 작품으로 평해지는 <지도>를 중심으로 민족성과 현대성 개념을 통한 음악 텍스트 분석을 실행하였다. 이를 통해 현대음악의 창작실천에 있어 민족성과 현대성의 논쟁적 관계를 탐구하고 이에 대한 사회적 함의를 도출하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구방법 본 연구에서는 탄둔의 <지도>에 드러난 민족성과 현대성을 확인하고 분석하는 방법으로 음악 텍스트 분석법 중 주로 악보 텍스트 분석을 선택하여 진행하였다. 민족성의 요소로는 전통 음악, 전통 악기, 민족 풍습의 요소를, 현대성의 요소로 새로운 음색을 개발하기 위한 실험, 멀티미디어 활용, 콜라주와 복합 스타일 등을 어떻게 활용했는지를 분석하였다. 결과 연구 결과, 음악의 민족성과 현대성은 서로 경쟁하는 관계가 아닌 상호 촉진하는 관계이며, 시대의 흐름에 따라 이 둘은 다양한 함의를 내포하는 것으로 확인되었다. 결론 이 연구는 동아시아 현대 음악 창작에서 민족성과 현대성에 대한 혼란과 논쟁을 이해하기 위한 기초자료로서, 더 나아가 탈식민지적 정신에 대한 논의를 활성화 하는데 기여하고자 한다. Purpose This study conducts a musical text analysis by adopting the concepts of ethnicity and modernity, focusing on <The Map>, known as one of the most representative works of a Chinese composer, Tan Dun. Known as the ‘Eastern and Western fusion approach,’ Tan Dun is one of the most controversial and representative figures among Chinese contemporary composers. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between ethnicity and modernity related to the controversy in the creative practice of modern music and to derive its social implications. Method In this study, music score text analysis was mainly selected among the music text analyses as a method for confirming and analyzing ethnicity and modernity revealed in Tan Dun's work, <The Map>. As elements of ethnicity, we analyzed how traditional music, traditional instruments, and elements of national customs were used. For the elements of modernity, we analyzed how experiments, multimedia, collage and complex styles were used to develop new tonalities and musical structure as a tool to reflect modern music. Results As a result of the study, ethnicity and modernity of music are not in a competitive relationship, but rather a relationship that promotes each other, and that these two have various implications depending on the passage of time. Conclusion This study serves as basic research for understanding the confusion and controversy over ethnicity and modernity in East Asian contemporary composers, and further contributes to revitalizing discussions on the postcolonial movement.

중국계 미국인 작곡가 탄둔의 작품 <지도>를 통해 본 탈식민주의적 담론 : 모방, 혼종성, 제3공간을 중심으로

본 연구는 이중 문화정체성을 가진 작곡가가 자신의 독특한 문화적 정체성을 정의하려는 시도와 두 문화 사이에서 음악 창작을 위해 채택한 창작 전략을 분석하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 연구방법으로 중국계 미국인 작곡가 탄둔(Tan Dun)을 분석의 대상으로삼아, 호미 바바(Homi K. Bhabha)의 탈식민주의(post-colonialism)이론을 분석틀로하여 그의 대표 작품인 <지도(The Map)>의 창작에 구현된 모방, 혼종, 제3공간의 내적 논리에 대해 심층 분석하였다. 연구방법은 음악인류학적 관점에 기초하여 작곡가의작품 구성 외에도 인터뷰 자료, 뉴스보도, 관련 문헌 등 2차 자료를 토대로 담론분석법을 사용하였다. 연구 결과, 탄둔의 <지도>는 서구의 포스트모던 접근의 구현, 서구 현대 작곡의 특정 기법에 대한 모방으로 문화적 유사성을 이용한 치환과 이종 문화 간 대립을 통해 제3공간에서의 중심의 해체, 그리고 새로운 정체성 확립을 구축한 것으로 분석되었다. 탄둔 음악 작품 중 가장 대표적인 작품인 <지도>는 21세기 현대 이중문화정체성을 가진 작곡가들의 탈식민주의 의식을 구현하는데 있어 주요한 연구 자료로서도 기능함을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 현대 음악 분야의 탈식민주의 탐구와 담론에 있어기초 자료가 될 것으로 기대한다. This study aims to analyze how composers with dual cultural identities define their unique cultural identities and the creative strategies they use to navigate between two cultures in their music creation. The research focuses on Chinese-American composer Tan Dun, using Homi K. Bhabha’s post-colonial theory as an analytical framework to investigate the internal logic of mimicry, hybridity, and the third space embodied in his representative work, The Map. The methodology combines a music-anthropological perspective with discourse analysis of secondary data sources such as interviews, news reports, and relevant literature, in addition to examining the composition of Tan Dun’s works. The findings reveal that The Map by Tan Dun exemplifies the application of Western postmodern approaches and the mimicry of specific techniques in Western contemporary composition. It uses cultural similarities for substitution and dismantles the center in the third space through the confrontation of heterogeneous cultures, thus establishing a new identity. The Map, one of Tan Dun's most significant works, serves as a crucial research material in demonstrating the post-colonial consciousness of 21st-century composers with dual cultural identities. This study is expected to provide foundational material for exploring and discussing post-colonialism in contemporary music.
