A superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) is an electro-mechanical battery which transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage, and vice versa. Many aspects of the quasi-static behavior of flywheel rotors still need to be studied closely, and the rotors require a stable and highly efficient supporting system such as high temperature superconductor (HTS) bearings, which offer dynamic stability without the use of active control. Quasi-static properties of HTS bearings in the radial direction provide data to solve problems which may occur in a running system. Since stiffness in countering rotor vibration is the main parameter for designing an HTS bearing system, we investigated the quasi-static properties of the magnetic force between permanent magnets(PMs) and HTS bulks in the radial direction. We measured radial stiffness, and discovered that bearing stiffness varied greatly depending on the number of active HTS bulks. This is valuable data for predicting the change in stiffness during partial HTS bearing failure. The quasi-static test results are used for optimal design and performance prediction for the 100 kWh class superconductor bearing.

A superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) is an electro-mechanical battery which transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage, and vice versa. A 35 kWh class SFES module was designed and constructed as part of a 100kWh/1MW class SFES composed of three 35 kWh class SFES modules. The 35 kWh class SFES is composed of a main frame, superconductor bearings, a composite flywheel, a motor/generator, electro-magnetic bearings, and a permanent magnet bearing. The high energy density composite flywheel is levitated by the permanent magnet bearing and superconductor bearings, while being spun by the motor/generator, and the electro-magnetic bearings are activated while passing through the critical speeds. Each of the main components was designed to provide maximum performance within a space-limited compact frame. The 35 kWh class SFES is designed to store 35 kWh, with a 350 kW charge/discharge capacity, in the 8,000 ~ 12,000 rpm operational speed range.

A superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) is an electro-mechanical battery which transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage, and vice versa. The 35 kWh class SFES is composed of a main frame, superconductor bearings, electro-magnetic dampers, a motor/generator, and a composite flywheel. The energy storing capacity of the SFES can be limited by the operational speed range of the system. The operational speed range is limited by many factors, especially the resonant frequency of the main frame and flywheel. In this study, a steel frame has been designed and constructed for a 35 kWh class SFES. All the main parts, their housings, and the flywheel are aligned and assembled on to the main frame. While in operation, the flywheel excites the main frame, as well as all the parts assembled to it, causing the system to vibrate at the rotating speed. If the main frame is excited at its resonant frequency, the system will resonate, which may lead to unstable levitation at the superconductor bearings and electro-magnetic dampers. The main frame for the 35 kWh class SFES has been designed and constructed to improve stiffness for the stable operation of the system within the operational speed range.

A superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) is an electro-mechanical battery which transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage, and vice versa. A 10 kWh class flywheel energy storage system (FESS) has been developed to evaluate the feasibility of a 35 kWh class SFES with a flywheel $I_p/I_t$ ratio larger than 1. The 10 kWh class FESS is composed of a main frame, a composite flywheel, active magnetic dampers (AMDs), a permanent magnet bearing, and a motor/generator. The flywheel of the FESS rotates at a very high speed to store energy, while being levitated by a permanent magnetic bearing and a pair of thrust AMDs. The 10 kWh class flywheel is mainly composed of a composite rotor assembly, where most of the energy is stored, two radial and two thrust AMD rotors, which dissipate vibration at critical speeds, a permanent magnet rotor, which supports most of the flywheel weight, a motor rotor, which spins the flywheel, and a central hollow shaft, where the parts are assembled and aligned to. The stators of each of the main components are assembled on to housings, which are assembled and aligned to the main frame. Many factors have been considered while designing each part of the flywheel, stator and frame. In this study, a 10 kWh class flywheel energy storage system has been designed and constructed for test operation.

We studied the mechanical and magnetic properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductor with and without resin and Ag impregnation. Bulk YBCO superconductor was manufactured with the top-seeded melt-growth method. Typical sample of 40mm X 20mm X 3mm was made and then 8 holes with 0.5mm diameter were drilled arbitrally. Epoxy resin and $AgNO_3$ were systematically added into the holes to compare the mechanical and magnetic properties of YBCO superconductor before and after reinforcement of resin and Ag. Based on the result of 3 point bending, bending strength increased with increasing amounts of resin and carbon nano-tube. However, it was found that the levitation force decreased after making hole, compared with virgin sample without hole.

Recently, studies have been carried out to develop unmanned Micro Air Vehicles(MAVs) that can search and monitor inside buildings during urban warfare or rescue operations in hazardous environments. However, existing fixed-wing and rotary-wing MAVs cannot travel at extremely low or high speeds, hover in place, or change directions instantly. This has lead researches to search for other flight methods that could overcome those drawbacks. Insect flight principles and its applications to MAVs are being studied as an alternative flight method. To take flight, insects flap and rotate their wings. These wing motions allow for high maneuverability flight such as hovering, vertical take off and landing, and quick acceleration and deceleration. This paper proposes a method for designing a mechanism that reproduces hovering insect flight, the basis for all other forms of insect flight. The design of a mechanism that can reproduce the motion that causes maximum lift is proposed, the required specifications are calculated, and a method for reproducing hovering insect flight with a single motor is presented. Also, feasibility of the design was confirmed by simulation.

Recently, superconductor flywheel energy storage systems (SFESs) have been developed for application to a regenerative power of train, a power quality improvement, the storage of distributed power sources such as solar and wind power, and a load leveling. As the high temperature superconductor (HTS) bearings offer dynamic stability without the use of active control, accurate analysis of the HTS bearing is very important for application to SFESs. Mechanical property of a HTS bearing is the main index for evaluating the capacity of an HTS bearing and is determined by the interaction between the HTS bulks and the permanent magnet (PM) rotor. HTS bearing rotor consists of PM and iron collector and the proper dimension design of them is very important to determine a supporting characteristics. In this study, we have optimized a rotor magnet array, which depends on the limited bulk size and performed various dimension layouts for thickness of the pole pitch and iron collector. HTS bearing rotor was installed into a single axis universal test machine for a stiffness test. A hydraulic pump was used to control the amplitude and frequency of the rotor vibration. As a result, the stiffness result showed a large difference more than 30 % according to the thickness of permanent magnet and iron collector. This is closely related to the bulk stiffness controlled by flux pining area, which is limited by the total bulk dimension. Finally, the optimized HTS bearing rotor was installed into a flywheel system for a dynamic stability test. We discussed the dynamic properties of the superconductor bearing rotor and these results can be used for the optimal design of HTS bearings of the 10kWh SFESs.

In this work, nano size $BaCeO_3$, which is a possible flux pinning medium of melt processed $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$ superconductor, was synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method using powders. $BaCeO_3$ and $CeO_2$ were mixed thoroughly using a ball milling for 24 hours and calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours for the formation $BaCeO_3$ powder. The obtained $BaCeO_3$ powder was attrition milled at various milling times of 60 min, 120 min and 240 min. The $BaCeO_3$ powders of various milling times were mixed with $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$ powder. Seed melt processed $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$-$BaCeO_3$ (15wt.%) superconductors were prepared and the superconducting properties were investigated. It was found that $T_c$ of $Y_{1.5}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$ samples was not significantly affected by $BaCeO_3$ addition, but $J_c$ of samples was increased by $BaCeO_3$ addition. The $J_c$ improvement by fine $BaCeO_3$ powder (120 min attrition-milled) was effective at low magnetic fields less than 2 T.
