As the technologies of electronic device have advanced these days, most of mechanical systems are designed with electronic control unit to take advantage of firmware flexibilities. On-board diagnosis, which detects the system malfunction and identifies potential source of error with its own diagnostic criteria, and fail-safe that can switch the mode of operation in view of recognized error characteristics enables easy maintenance and troubleshooting as well as system protection. This paper dealt with the development of diagnosis and fail-safe function for proportional flow control valve. All type of errors related to valve control system components are investigated and assigned to a specific hexadecimal codes. Cumulative error detection algorithm is applied in order for the sensitivity and reliability to be appropriate. Embedded simulatro which runs simultaneously with system program provides the virtual error simulation environment for expeditious development of algorithm. The diagnosis function was verified both with solenoid valve and embedded simulator test.

Proportional solenoid valves are modulating type which can control the displacement of valve continuously by means of electromagnetic force that is proportional to solenoid coil current. Since the solenoid type modulating valves have the advantages of fast response and compact design over air-operated or motor-operated valves, they have been gaining acceptance in chemical or power plant to control the flow of fluids such as water, steam and gas. This paper deals with an auto tuning of position controller that can provides the proportional and integral gain automatically base on the dynamic system identification. A process characteristics of the solenoid valve is estimated with critical gain and critical period at stability limit which is implemented relay feedback and controller parameters are determined by the classical Ziegler-Nichols design method. Auto tuning algorithm was verified with experiments and the effects of operating point at which relay control is activated as well as relay amplitude are investigated.

Over the years, electromagnetic control valve, which utilize magnetic force for the modulation of pilot valve, has replaced the air-operated valve(AOV) and motor-operated valve(MOV) by virtue of advanced technology for solenoid design. Its superior operating characteristics and packless design make it favorable to be applied in most demanding applications such as nuclear and chemical plants. This paper deals with the steady-state characteristics of proportional flow control valve which regulates the large amount of high pressure fluid with two stage valve design. The main disc follows the pilot disc by the differential pressure that is changed with self-controlled system. The pilot pressure of control chamber, pilot flow and relative displacement of main disc to pilot disc at steady-state are investigated and the effect of main disc area ratio on the control characteristics is analyzed.

This research deals with the development of digital type servocontroller for proportional flow control valve based on the functional analysis of commerical analog type positioner. In addition to all the functions that are implemented in conventional controller, it is designed with some useful facilities such as LVDT output signal auto calibration, self-performance test with embedded function generator and remote control and monitoring, etc. Moreover, optional open-loop and current control mode can be utilized to design a proportional integral position controller gain together with the system identification of plunger dynamics. Hence, those design features not only enable the easy and simply calibration, but also ensure the reliable operation with the optimal system parameter setup. The control performance of valve position and versatile utility functions are tested and verified with experiments. For the next year, it will advanced to the on-board diagnosis and fail-safe functions for smart valve system.

Simulator is a development equipment which enables the ECU to operate in normal mode by simulating the interface signal between ECU and mechanical system electrically. Embedded simulator means simulation function is embedded in ECU firmware, hence the electrical signal interface is replaced by the substitution of information at system program level. This paper explains the development of embedded transmission simulator for the verification of TCU firmware function which covers shifting control and on-board diagnosis. The embedded simulation program is executed in TCU processor along with the TCU firmware and it provides TCU firmware with not only the speed information those are appropriate both in driving and shifting conditions, but also the fault detection signals. Experimental results show that the validity of embedded simulator and its usefulness to the TCU firmware development and verification.
