Lean combustion in a SI engine has been achieved by optimizing the injection interval injection timing and fuel spray angle. The effect of fuel injection timing and injection interval on lean misfire limit has been investigated in a MPI SI engine. To investigate influence of injection characteristics. we measured lean misfire limit. torque. and fuel consumption. As a result. injection timing and injection interval governs lean misfire limit and brake specific fuel consumption.

The flow characteristics of 2-valve and 4-valve cylinder heads with various blocked-valve were investigated in a steady flow rig. Flow coefficient, swirl intensity and tumble intensity were measured by combination of size and position of blocked-valve. Using blocked-valve in both cylinder heads, flow coefficient was reduced whereas intensity of swirl and tumble were increased in comparison with conventional valve. Under the same size of blockage, the value of flow coefficient and swirl(or tumble) intensity were different at each position of blockage. We obtained optimized positions of blockage in both cylinder heads.<br/>

Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow. Recently. there are lots of studies on steady flow with different SCV geometries. In this study the flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady test rig for different SCV open ratios. Each swirl ratio of several SCV angle was quantified by swirl impulse meter and 2D-LDV measurement. The results showed that the swirl ratio was controlled between 2.3 and 3.8 based on SCV angles. The velocity distributions of in-cylinder flow field were measured by 2-D LDV test and visualized swirl and tumble flow pattern at different positions. In this engine, we found out that the swirl was dominant flow.<br/>

N/A It is well known that the flow and spray characteristics is critical factor on the performance and emission of a direct injection diesel engine. So this study aims to investigate the interaction of flow and spray characteristics. At first, in cylinder flow distributions in swirl adaptor for 4-valve cylinder head of DI Diesel engine were investigated under steady conditions for different SCV angles mounted on the cylinder head with steady rig test and 2-D LDV. And the in-cylinder flow was quantified in terms of mean flow coefficient and swirl ratio/tumble ratio. It was found that the swirl ratio is controlled between 2.3 and 3.8. Then spray characteristics of the intermittent injection were investigated. PDA system was utilized for measurement of a droplet size and velocity. The analyses of the PDA results are carried out with Time Dividing Method. It was found that there is a correlation between the swirl flow and SMD. The droplet size and the velocity were nearly constant value with each SCV angle. And the swirl ratio is higher, SMD smaller. The swirl ratio was helpful factor to the atomization of droplet.

Combustion phenomena dominant factor of engine emission and power were measured using optical approach methods. Combustion pressures were measured for combustion analysis at various engine rpm, spark timing, and air access ratio. We also measured instantaneous flame image and chemi-luminescence to verify the characteristics of flame propagation, the structure of flame evolution in a optically accessible single cylinder engine.<br/>

In each case, flow coefficient, swirl intensity and tumble intensity were measured. In addition, flow angle and turbulence intensity were also acquired to qualify these characteristics districtly. As expected, flow coefficient was reduced whereas intensity of swirl and tumble were increased in comparison with conventional valve. We experiments under some conditions to obtain the optimized shape of SCV in both cylinder heads.<br/>

To provide the appropriate direction for development of transient control algorism in SI engine, performance analysis and evaluation under rapid accelerating and decelerating driving conditions are carried out by experimental study. In order to evaluate the characteristics of transient performance quantitatively, the concept of transient response method has to be needed. Several parameters such as engine speed, mass air flow, MAP, fuel inject duration are measured simultaneously during the rapid opening and closing of the throttle valve by the step motor controlled by PC. During the rapid opening, MAP or mass air flow is increased without delay, but engine revolution is delayed as long as the valve opening rate is changed. Dead time and response delay time of engine revolution are to be changed by valve opening rate.<br/>
