차세대의 정체성 함양을 위한 새로운 패러다임 - 미국 동포를 중심으로 -

백인 특권이 존재하는 미국 사회에서 코리안 아메리칸으로 살아가는 것은 무엇을 의미하는가? 코리안 아메리칸 즉 미주 한인의 확고한 정체성 확립과 공동체 의식을 갖는 것을 의미한다. 어떻게 미국에서 주인 의식을 갖고 미주한인의 정체성을 확립하여 책임과 의무를 다할 수 있을까? 또한 미주 한인이란 인종차별에 적극적으로 대응하면서 목소리를 내는 것을 의미한다. 1992년 4월 29일 로스앤젤레스 (‘사이구’) 폭동은 미주 한인 이민 역사상 가장 중요한 ‘전환점’ ‘분수령’ 또는 ‘정신을 차리게 해준’ 사건이다. 사이구 폭동을 경험하면서 미주 한인으로서의 새로운 자아 의식을 형성하게 되었으며 앞으로 미국에서 미주한인으로서 어떻게 방법을 모색해야 하는가에 대한 토론과 대화가 시작되었다. 특히 다인종 다문화 사회인 미국에서 미주한인은 무엇을 의미하는지 근본적으로 생각하게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한국어학교 또는 한글학교에서는 차세대들에게 한국어, 한국 문화, 한국 역사를 가르쳐왔다. 이제 차세대 교육의 새로운 패러다임이 필요한 시기라고 강조한다. 즉 한국어, 한국 역사, 문화뿐만 아니라 미주한인사, 문화, 역사를 차세대들에게 접목시킴으로써 그들이 자연스럽게 한국 역사와 문화를 이해하게 하여 그들이 확고한 미주한인 정체성을 확립할 수 있는 발판을 마련해 주는 것이 필요하다. 미주 한인사는 대한민국 근ㆍ현대사의 일부이고 한인 디아스포라의 중요한 부분이다. 동시에 미주한인사는 미국 역사의 일부로서 미국 사회 발전에 미주 한인들이 크게 기여했다는 것을 알리고 차세대들에게 가르쳐야 한다. 차세대 교육의 새로운 패러다임은 차세대들에게 미주한인 역사와 문화를 먼저 가르쳐 그들이 확고한 미주 한인 정체성 확립을 고취시키고 공동체 의식을 함양하여 미주 한인 사회와 한국의 발전에 기여하는 인재를 육성하는 것을 의미한다. What does it mean to be Korean Americans in the context of white privilege? To be Korean Americans means establishing a strong sense of Korean American identity and community consciousness. How can Korean Americans claim a sense of ownership and responsibility in American society as well as fulfill their obligations? They should also stand up against racial discrimination and empower themselves by raising their voices. For the Korean American community, Saigu(April 29) - the 1992 Los Angeles riots - is known as its most important historical event, a “turning point,” “watershed event,” or “wake-up call.” Saigu profoundly altered the Korean American discourse, igniting debates and dialogue in search of new directions. Many believe that as Los Angeles burned, the Korean Americans were born-or reborn-on April 29, 1992. The riot served as a catalyst to critically examine what it meant to be Korean Americans in relation to multicultural politics and race, economics and social ideologies. And yet, Korean language school educational curriculum in the United States mainly teaches Korean language, history, and culture. However, I strongly argue that it is time to shift and transform Korean language school curriculum from Korean education to Korean American education. Adoption of Korean American education does not necessarily mean abandoning Korean language, history, and culture education. Instead, it advocates teaching Korean American history and culture first thus contributing to the formation of the Korean American identity. Korean American history is part of modern Korean history and diaspora. In addition, it is also a very important part of American history, and contributions of Korean Americans should be acknowledged, recognized and taught to young Korean American students as well as the general public. Korean American history is the foundation of Korean American identity. A strong Korean American identity will enable the next generation to be part of the Korean American community and develop a community consciousness.
