Vol.21 No.1

In this paper, we attempt to examine the different effects on the conditions and determinants of wage workers" job instability by regions in Korea. We employ two survival analysis techniques: the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Cox"s proportional hazard model. For this, we used the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) waves 1 through 12 and work history data of wave 12. Our results show that the features of probability of unemployment are very different in regions and there is a difference in the effects of workers" specific and labor market characteristics on the unemployment risk by regions as well. It is also confirmed that workers of younger ages, workers with low level education, workers in smaller enterprises, and workers as temporary employees have higher effects on the unemployment risk, while the middle aged workers with high level of education, workers in larger enterprises with a labor union, workers in the construction, producer and social service industries, and workers in a regular position have lower effects. The various contributions of individual and labor market characteristics to explain the difference of unemployment risk by regions might be caused by the regional industrial and labor market structures. These findings imply that the national policy must target for regional specificity, and should pay more attention to ensuring the job stability against unemployment risks in each region.

Vol.17 No.1

This study intends to estimate the effect of the characteristics of personal and household, as well as the regional structure of service industries on married women's labor market participation by using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study data(1998-2007). We used the Fixed Effect Panel Logit analysis to estimate the model. Our main results indicate that the participation of married women is negatively affected by whether their husband are wageworker or not, husband's income level, as well as the growth rate of retail and wholesale industry, finance and insurance industry, and public and other services, while positively affected by their living costs and the growth rate of restaurants and hotels. We also confirmed that the effect of regional growth rate of service industries on married woman's labor market participation is different by reigns. Thus, in order to analyze women's labor problem at the local level more clearly, it is necessary to be considered the view point of multi-level in terms of the socioeconomic characteristics and regional industrial structures.

Vol.24 No.3

Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS, waves 1-13) and work history data of wave 13, we examine wage worker’s job instability by area category and analyze the effect of regional factor about Korean wage worker’s job instability. We define the job instability as unemployment probability, and explore whether or not there is evidence of regional effect to Korea worker’s job instability as well as individual and labor market characteristics. For this fact, we used the Kaplan-Meier model for explaining unemployment probability by duration, and the Conditional Gap Time model for analyzing components job instability that allows the application of repeated unemployment events of individual job experience. Our results show that regional variable acts as the factor of affecting wage worker’s job instability when control individual and job characteristics. Also, the effect can confirm that it is more clear in case of reducing area category from wide area unit to administration unit by cities and provinces. It means that the unobserved regional characteristics affect the worker’s job duration by regions.

Vol.57 No.5

Various crimes occur owing to the concentration of population in the city and simultaneously, fear of crime increases. Fear of crime is a factor that shrinks daily life and negatively affects the quality of life. Various theories on crime have been proposed, and several studies have been conducted on the relationships between the urban neighborhood environment and crime occurrence. In particular, certain Newtown or urban regeneration projects adopted Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies to mitigate crime occurrence. However, few studies have been empirically conducted to assess the impacts of CPTED strategies on the fear of crime. This study focused on neighborhood environmental factors that influence the perception of crime fear through survey data in Seoul. Analysis results confirmed that the higher the satisfaction with the neighborhood walking environment, cleanliness, vitality, and residential environment, the lesser the fear of crime among citizens. In addition, certain semantic segmentation variables have significant associations with the fear of crime. For instance, depth-to-height ratio (D/H), sidewalk ratio, and green area ratio were significantly associated with the fear of crime. Next, street networks with higher centrality have significant associations with a higher level of crime fear. Finally, social trust was also significantly associated with a lower level of crime fear. This study examined the relationships between neighborhood CPTED strategies and the fear of crime and discussed policy implications to mitigate it.

Vol.19 No.3

In this paper, we attempt to examine the different effects on the household income inequality by regions in Korea. We employed two inequality decomposition methods: inequality decompositions by factor components and regression-based decomposition by determinants of income. For this, we used the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) waves 1 through 11. Our results show that the features of household income inequality are very different by regions. There is a great difference in contribution on the income inequality by income sources and individual characteristics of the householders. As might be expected, it is also confirmed that the effects of income sources and individual characteristics are very different between the regional household income inequality and the total income inequality in Korea. The various contributions of individual characteristics to explain the inequality by regions might be caused by the regional industrial structures. Based on these findings, we can derive a policy implication: (1) national policy must target for regional specificity and individual hierarchy, and (2) local governments should pay more attention to reducing the inequality in each region.

Vol.29 No.1

The change of exchange rate will affect employment known by the factor of domestic firms` earning and production through the change of relative price. In this paper, we attempt to examine the effects on employment and wage of Korean manufacturing items of exchange rate over the period 2000 to 2009. Our results show that the general pattern in the effect of exchange rate shock is negatively associated with the employment of Korean manufacturing. It is also confirmed that the effects of exchange rate on both employment and wage through export and import processes are differ from manufacturing items. These results suggest that although the effect of exchange rate may have suitable in the past trade structure which is centered on traditional manufacturing items, it is un-explainable in the recent trade structure of manufacturing based on high-tech. Thus, it is necessary to fractionation analysis of manufacturing sectors for more systematical analysis of the effect of exchange rate shock through export and import processes on manufacturing employment.
