Ubiquotuous technology should be adopted in railroad business to provide passenger"s security and convenience. In this project, IT and smart sensor technologies are reviewed, benchmarked, designed, and implemented. The target system is the next generation high speed train to be developed and operated in Korea with the maximum speed of 400㎞/h. Wireless sensor network with smart sensors is implemented around a train car. PC-like IT terminal will be designed and implemented so an individual passenger can use it to do information retrieval through the Internet, personal data processing, the e-learning, shopping on the railroad, and so on. These provision will give comfort, convenience, and safety of a passenger during his/her trip.

Performed was a survey to find the level of interest on passenger services using IT and smart sensor technology in connection with High Speed Train development in Korea. The survey respondents were sampled from the KTX passengers, KTX crews, Korail employees, IT or sensor experts, and rolling stock experts. The results of the survey were categorized as importance, urgency/necessity, importance vs urgency/necessity, improvement measure, preferable activities based on the trip length, and inconveniencies. By analyzing the results, service items that can be implemented to the High Speed Train were recognized. The results showed that a passenger tends to expect to have his/her comfort and convenience, an attendant safety and serviceability, a Korail employee information provision and serviceability, an IT/sensor expert technological implementation done, and a rolling stock expert implementation done in practical level.
열차 승객을 위한 멀티미디어콘텐츠 및 인터넷 검색 시스템 설계에 관한 연구

For the remarkable enhancement of high-speed rail passenger services, a system which provides various multimedia contents and Internet search functions was designed. The system gets inputs from a passenger and displays various multimedia contents on the touch sensitive LCD panel attached on a passenger seat. This kind of service is new in Korea and not easy to find in other countries, either. In this paper, we presented a design of a system which provides not only one-way broadcasting services but also searching capability of various information interactively. Informations to be provided are train schedule, transfer information, tour information, E-books, movies, music, ets. Successful completion of the system development in the following years is expected to strengthen international competitiveness of Korean railway industry.

Recently, the smart sensors and USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technologies are emerging. Smart sensors add the capability of storing local temporary data, processing instant operations, transmitting information outward, to the simple sensing devices. The USN is a wireless network of sensor/smart sensors that can collect data anywhere anytime and exchange the data within the network. In this research, case studies are performed on the smart sensors and USN applications. The cases were grouped in four categories, domestic private, domestic public, foreign private, and foreign public. Based on that survey, promising applications will be proposed and developed to be implemented to the next generation high-speed EMU.

철도차량 내부에서는 기계로 인한 소음과 음성으로 인한 소음 등 다양한 소음이 존재한다. 객실 내에 커다란 음성소음이 발생하여도 개인적 제재가 곤란한 경우가 있으며 이로 인해 열차를 이용하는 승객은 열차여행 내내 불쾌감을 느끼게 된다. 본 과제에서는 객실 내의 음성 소음을 측정하여 기계적 제어를 시도함으로써 승무원의 개입은 최소화하면서 소음을 줄이고 승객에게는 쾌적한 여행을 제공하고자 한다. Various noise from a machine and from a voice exists inside the vehicle of a train. Objection is difficult when ‘noise from a voice’ - loud-voice occurred in a passenger car. For that reason, passengers are displeased during all the trip through a train. In this work, we tried machine control by measuring loud-voice in a passenger car. We shall decrease loud-voice with minimum of intervention of a train crew and provide a pleasant train trip for passengers.
열차 화장실 내 응급상황 감지 시스템 구현에 관한 연구

A system would be needed in the future train to enhance the passenger healthcare in the lavatory. When an emergency situation suddenly befell a passenger in a train lavatory, prompt detection of a such emergency situation is quite useful to take care of the passenger. In this paper, an array of sensors, instead of CCTV, was used to detect the emergency situation. CCTV is considered better, however it shall not be used in a lavatory due to the passenger privacy. Based on two scenarios, such as measuring inactive time intervals and sensing passenger motion, the Lavatory Emergency Detection System(LEDS) was developed and tested according to the test plans. The test results showed the operability of the LEDS under a controlled situation. The LEDS will be tested in a lavatory on a moving train to find its adaptability.
