The importance of pedestrian injury in low speed crash has been increased lately. We can meet the requirements of pedestrian protection lower legform to bumper tests by using computer simulation. Frontal bumper system and its outer shape plays an important role to reduce pedestrian damage. We suggest some design requirements and bumper system layout to reduce pedestrian damage in this paper

Conventional bumper systems have been composed of Cover, Foam and Reinf. Thus they were disadvantageous in the aspect of weight, cost and recycling, but this Gim bumper system reinforced by ribs on the back surface of the covcr could simplify the production procedures and its structure by eliminating the E.A foam and Reinf. To prevent sink marks which usually occur on the effective face of a product when ribs for stiffness are added, we have applied Nitrogen gas through the gas channel and thus made the wall thickness generally uniform. This bumper system could be applied to mass production through many trial and errors of tests to satisfy 2.5mph performance.<br/>
