Three intrinsic char reaction models of unreacted shrinking core, random pore and char burnout kinetics (CBK/E) were implemented in the open source code OpenFOAM. Evaluation of the models was performed for a 2.1 ㎿e laboratory-scale furnace and a 500 ㎿e tangential-fired full-scale boiler. For the laboratoryscale furnace there was minor difference among the char reaction models except for the random pore model. For the industrial boiler the influence of the char reaction models was found insignificant in the overall temperature distribution. On the other hand results showed that the CBK/E model predicts the most accurate char burnout rate in the industrial boiler.

This study predicts ash deposition propensity of blend coal with low rank in a 500㎿ commercial boiler. A predicted results with devolatilization model and char oxidation model is reasonable compared with designed data. The results of prediction in ash deposition show that low rank coal with high slag characteristic is a main factor and the location at injection of low rank coal effect ash deposition propensity.

Melter-Gasifier is generally used in alternative iron making process to produce liquid iron. To simulate Melter-Gasifier, we should consider not only complex motion of particles but also chemical reactions between coke, pulverized coal and oxygen. In addition, due to the high injection speed of oxygen, a cavity called raceway is created from the end of the oxygen lance. In this work, we conducted simulation of Melter-Gasifier using OpenFOAM with Discrete Element Method (DEM).
