In the Confucian traditions of East Asia, costume means civilization and cultural identity. This paper will explore the process of how the Ming-style costume was accepted during the transition of Koryo and Joseon dynasty. During the 14-15th century, costume was the critical part of the anti-Mongolization reform both in China and Korea. In face of the social custom influenced by the Mongol elements, the Ming government launched a cultural reformation in the name of “abolishing barbarian`s custom with the Chinese”(用夏變夷), which was also launched in Koryo and Joseon dynasty later. The newly established “Great Ming Costume System” was seen as the renaissance of Chinese culture by the Koryo and Joseon Confucian elites. Accepting Ming-style costume also meant “restoring ancestor`s(Koryo) tradition”(追復祖宗之盛) for them. The Ming-style costume influenced Korean history for more than five hundred years and played an key role in the Sino-Korean relationship.
