        포스트휴먼 시대의 통역사 교육 : 테크네인문학적 접근 가능성에 대한 고찰

        Cutting-edge technologies are propelling us beyond the old human limits, ushering us into a post-human era. Over the past couple of years, there has been a surge of research on educational transformation through a post-human lens, as the emerging era requires students to acquire a new set of work-ready skills. As the rise of AI-powered T&I tools poses a series of unique challenges for translators and interpreters, T&I programs also need to prepare the students for any changes that might occur in the work environment. Against this backdrop, this paper attempts to identify future developments in a post-human era and proposes future directions for the curriculum so that it caters to the changing market demands. The concept of techne-humanities is explored to look at how the understanding of technology and humanities can help future interpreters develop strong competencies in the new age. Potential implications for educational practice and issues for consideration are discussed.

        구성주의적 노트테이킹 수업 경험에 관한 연구

        Although note-taking inarguably plays an important part in consecutive interpreting, prescriptive teaching of note-taking strategies can be challenging as the technique remains highly individual and requires practice. The constructivist approach has thus been embraced by a handful of researchers in the last few years to encourage group work and help students maximize learning outcomes. This study incorporates this recent direction in note-taking research to explore how students co-construct note-taking knowledge. Six note-taking techniques adapted from Rozan – verticality, nuance markers, symbols and abbreviations, noting the idea, links and logical connections, dynamic note-taking – were used as first year T&I graduate students engaged in constructivist classroom discussions and activities over the course of six weeks. Students’ experiences were captured in the form of journals and survey, which hinted at continued integration of new knowledge with the existing ones. As students engaged in group exercises designed to encourage inquiry-based learning and personal reflection, prior knowledge was brought to the learning process, thereby enabling students to shape and reshape their own concepts of note-taking. This study is expected to prompt interpreter trainers and learners to explore new possibilities for teaching and learning note-taking, thereby encouraging new knowledge formation.

        순차통역 수업에서의 동영상 활용에 관한 예비연구 : 학습자의 관점에서

        Public speaking skills are essential to improving student interpreters’ consecutive interpreting performance. Student performance was video recorded for a semester and weekly assessed by the students as a tool to help trainee interpreters demonstrate a critical awareness of extra-linguistic aspects ofspeech, i.e. delivery problems, and improve presentation skills. A 6-point scale assessment sheet was employed based on two main criteria: body language and vocal behavior. A survey was also conducted towards the end of the semester to understand how the students evaluated the video-aided classroom and to reveal further data on students’ consecutive interpreting delivery. Whereas no significant improvement in students’ public speaking skills was manifested, students responded very positively to the trial, suggesting benefits and didactic approaches for further studies.

        원격통역의 개념과 연구 동향 고찰

        The widespread use of remote interpreting technology has long pushed remote interpreting into the realm of professional interpreting practice. However, the notion has not received its much deserved attention despite the emergence of various remote interpreting settings, mainly due to the relative paucity of related research. This paper reflects on the term 'remote interpreting' used to describe different interpreting settings in a number of countries, illustrates which alternative terms are used, and offers an overview of international research with a special focus on Europe where studies have been carried out since the mid-1970s. Particular reference is also made to the need for remote interpreting research in Korea that would allow researchers, practitioners, and teachers to paint an accurate picture of the extent of its usage in the country. Building on the review of previous projects and research on remote interpreting, the article presents future implications for the practice.

        The Structural and Attitudinal Attributes of Translation Professionalism

        In recent years, researchers have increasingly investigated the topic of professionalism in translation studies, revealing the field's desire to elevate Translation to professional status. Indeed, the aspiration to improve professionalism in the domain of Translation seems unchallenged in the literature, but Translation professionalism still remains an elusive concept. This study joins the burgeoning body of research in Translation professionalism and attempts to stimulate discussion by taking a different approach in defining Translation professionalism and examining the professional status of Translation in a rapidly changing landscape. To reach this objective, this article revisits the origin of professionalism built by Hall (1968), and discusses the structural and attitudinal dimensions of the concept within the Translation context. Barriers to Translation professionalism and suggestions for fostering the structural and attitudinal attributes are also briefly provided.

        인하우스 통번역사의 직업지위 인식에 관한 질적연구-조직 내 직업지위를 중심으로

        Most graduates of T&I M.A. programs in Korea work as in-house Translators, i.e. salaried Translators within organizational settings. Recently, this occupational group has faced increasing challenges on multiple fronts, notably the rapid advancements in machine translation, increasing numbers of paraprofessionals, and work scope that extends beyond T&I. A possible detrimental consequence can be lower occupational status. This paper takes a qualitative approach to determine the elements associated with the status of in-house Translators as perceived by the Translators themselves and users, employees who receive T&I services. The 16 in-depth interviews suggest that in-house Translators tend to think that status is fundamentally about how users perceive them, whereas users identified subject-matter knowledge and individual competency as key status determinants. Building on the analysis, potential implications of the findings for research, practice, and pedagogy are discussed.

        코로나19 상황에서의 통번역대학원 원격 모의회의 수업 경험에 관한 사례연구

        The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on education. As classes moved online to avoid campus outbreaks, teachers and students struggled to make remote learning work. This study examines the experiences of interpreter trainers of mock-conference courses during the pandemic. In-depth interviews with two teachers were carried out to uncover insight into the impact of the pandemic on mock conference, a course that heavily relies on the use of simulation and role play to link classroom activities to real-life practice. Despite the limitations of online learning tools, the trainers adapted to the new norm by adopting resourceful ways to give remote students “as close to the real experience as possible.” Meanwhile, the two trainers identified “new tools fit for the course’s main learning outcomes” and “student support infrastructure” as primary areas in need for assistance. Student feedback from course evaluations was also analyzed to increase the credibility of the findings. This study is expected to help interpreter trainers navigate through the crisis and provide a possible way towards effective online training of future interpreters.
