For 100 hours down-sized Pd catalytic converters are subject to engine exhaust gas that<br/> changes its states according to a transient fast aging cycles. The equivalence ratio and<br/> temperature of the feed gas are individually adjusted in order to see their influences on the<br/> catalytic conversion efficiency. A Pd-only catalytic converters are fast aged for 100 hours<br/> by lean exhaust gas at the temperatures above 1,000℃, and the conversion efficiencies<br/> during the process are measured and analyzed.

Due to the simplicity steady port flow rig tests are routinely conducted during cylinder head development process to assess the in-cylinder air motion which has a strong influence on the performance, efficiency, and exhaust emissions of the diesel engines. The flow through the intake port and valves of a cylinder head on the rig is numerically simulated in order to firstly confirm the validity of the computational flow dynamic software before attempting to compute the unsteady flow through a running engine and to appreciate the correlation between the flow in the working engine and the flow through the port flow rig. The simulation is found to closely predict the flow coefficient and swirl numbers at low valve lifts. but to underestimate them at high valve lifts.

Compression ignition of homogeneous charges in IC engines proposes possibilities of achieving the high thermal efficiency of DI diesel engines with low level of NOx and particulate emissions of SI engines. The objectives of this study are to further understand the characteristics of the HCCI (Homogeneous charge compression ignition) combustion, and to find practical ways of extending the rich HCCI operation limit in an engine-like environment. DME fuel is supplied either in the form of premixture with air or directly injected in the combustion chamber of a rapid compression and expansion machine under the conditions of various equivalence ratio and injection timing. The cylinder pressure is measured and the rate of he at release is computed from the measured pressure for the analysis of the combustion characteristics. Exhaust emissions are analyzed by an FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared) and a CLD(Chemiluminescent Detector). The experimental data to date show that the RCEM operates without knock on mixtures of higher equivalence ratio and exhaust emissions reduced when DME is directly injected than inducted as perfect or nearly perfect premixture.

When an automobile is braked, all or most part of its kinetic energy disappears in the form<br/> of waste heat to the ambient. A possible way is investigated to convert some of this braking<br/> energy to useful electrical energy which will improve fuel economy of the vehicle by reducing<br/> the power to derive the alternator. With some extra batteries and the standard alternator of<br/> overall efficiency around 20% the study indicates that the fuel efficiency of the small passenger<br/> cars can be improved about 2 percent in FTP 75 mode.
