The main object of tins work is to investigate the spray behavior and spray charateristics of methanol and MX5 for tile bulk combustion. For this purpose, the effects of the ambient temperature and the injection pressure have been studied with the PIV system and CVCC for visualization. In tins experiment, the spray visualization of methanol and M85 was performed under various conditions such as ambient temperature, injection pressure.<br/> As a result, it is noticed that the increase of ambient temperature and injection pressure influenced tile formation of mixture. For the formation of homogeneous mixture, the improvement of fuel vaporization and tile formation of uniform temperature field were required.<br/>

Down-sized catalytic converters are used to reduce the time and expenses involved in fast aging tests of the automotive catalysts. Small converters are connected to each branches of a manifold. in which flow engine exhaust of different equivalence ratio and temperature. The equivalence ratio and temperature of the feed gas are individually adjusted by applying different levels of insulation and Quantities of secondary air. A Pd-only catalytic converters are fast aged for 50 hours by lean exhaust gas at the temperatures above l,000˚C, and the conversion efficiencies during the process are measured and analyzed. The catalytic converters deteriorate little faster at higher temperature and by leaner exhaust gas. The Pd catalyst seems to be much more durable to aging than Pt/Rh catalyst test earlier.

Ion current in an S.I engine cylinder is measured with the spark plug as a probe. The peak values are confirmed to show a fair correlation with local air-fuel ratio and engine speed. The implication is that the ion current measured at the spark plug may provide a signal for the local mixture strength, which is the key parameter in precise fuel control for furture engines especially of gasoline direct injection type.<br/>

A methode is demonstrated to reduce the time and expenses in fast aging tests of the catalysts. Down-sized catalytic converters are connected to a manifold branches of which are properly insulated to provide each converter with engine exhaust gas at different temperature.<br/> The Pt/Rh catalyst used in the present study loses its activity faster in the early phase of aging operation, which can be better approximated by a second-order activity function in the catalyst aging model.<br/>

Degradation of automotive catalysts is experimentally investigated under some steady but harsh aging conditions of high temperature and lean air-fuel ratio. The experimental data are then used to calibrate a preliminary model which is proposed herein to predict the extent of degradation as a function of aging time under arbitrary aging conditions in principle.<br/>

The research was conducted to develop a new three-way catalyst which has better low temperature activity and durability than current ones. Honeycomb type catalysts with different Rh/Pd, Rh/Pd/Pt loading ratios were tried in this experiment Conversion effectiveness of each catalyst was measured as a function of temperature and redox ratio using a model gas test bench. In addition, a single cylinder gasoline engine was used to find the conversion characteristics for THC, CO and CO2. The conversion characteristics for LIHCs(CI-C6) were also analyzed. Catalyst with Rh/Pd=1/18 loading ratio showed the best conversion effectiveness among the eight catalysts, and the light-off temperature of this catalyst was 26℃ for 50% THC conversion

A numerical procedure for the analysis of transient behavior in a monolithic catalytic converter is presented. The thermal behavior of a monolithic catalytic converter is fully coupled with mass transfer and exothermic reaction between exhaust gases and the catalytic converter. In the present study, all these processes are solved simultaneously. The heat transfer process is approximated by combinging one dimensional convection and conduction and the chemical reaction is also simply modelled by using the concepts of reaction rate and reaction heat. All the partial diffenrential equations for the heat transfer, mass transfer and chemical reactions are appximated by using finite volume method. Resulting algebraic equations are solved using the Newton's method. To see the workability of present numerical method, two well known problems, say step increase and step decrease in the gas inlet temperature, have been calculated. Comparion of present solutions with previous solutions shows a good agreement.

FTIR spectroscopy, useful technology for simultaneous and continuous measurement of the various components of the automotive exhaust gas, is utilized to investigate catalytic reaction charactristics of methane and a few unregulated exhaust emissions of NGV. Major fidings are (1) catalytic reaction characteristics of methane measured in unsteady states of varying temperature are similar to those measured in steady states, (2) about 24 % of NO get oxidized to NO₂ as soon as they encounter catalysts, (3) study of formaldehyde suffers from difficulties in measurement due to the proximity in wavenumber of formaldehyde and methane, and requires an analyzer of higher resolution and accuracy than used in this study.<br/>

In this study. purification chracteristics has been investigated on the catalystic reaction of methane from the simulated natural gas vehicle (NGV) exhaust on a palladium catalysat. Parameters that effect the catalytic reaction of methane considered were exhaust gas components such as O₂. NO. CO. H₂O. Two kinds of Pd catalyst used were different from additives. The conversion efficiency of methane in the three-way catalysts was sharply reduced in the range of redox ratio from 1.0 to 0.7. It was found that CH₄ was oxidized by O₂ in the lean region and by a simultaneous reaction at NO and O₂ in the rich region. At a higher concentration of H₂O. the mehtane conversion efficiency was rapidly reduced in the range of redox ratio from 1.5 to 1.2.

New engine technologies are sought for resolution of the air pollution and energy issues over automobiles in the 21st century.<br/> Concept of bulk combustion has a great potential in this respect. Autoignition characteristics of methanol are numerically analyzed in continuation of the previous study on those of methane. Methanol is found to have better characteristics for spontaneous ignition after compression.
