Seals are very important devices to prevent leakage of fluid. In rotary mechanisms, seals of different types are used as sealing devices. Mechanical seals are employed when they operate under critically severe conditions. In this paper, failure modes and types of pumps installed in commercial ships and problems of rnecharu, al seal adopted are investigated to improve pumping performances and sealing reliabilities. Life cycle of mechanical seals used for fuel oil supply pumps are very short because they used heavy fuel oil which contains very high foreign materials. Leakage in mechanical seal is caused mainly by failure of sealing face.
간섭량에 따른 로터리 유니온용 립 시일의 거동특성 해석

Rotary unions are widely used rotating machine components in fluid machinery. Because the fluid leakage in sealing part can lead to fatal defect on equipments, it is essential to understand the precise behaviors of the seal used. In this paper, a lip seal made of PTFE is designed and the behavior characteristics are investigated using MARC for various amounts of interference and fluid pressure. The seal deformation and contact areas are increased with interference and pressure, however the maximum contact pressure showed different behaviors. The results can be used in design of rotary union and further studies are required.
접촉식 시일의 형상변화에 따른 변형거동 및 응력강도 해석

기존의 회전축 실링 유니트나 퀵 커플러 등에 많이 사용하는 접촉식 오링을 비롯한 멀티립을 갖춘 접촉식 시일은 가스의 누출을 차단하기 위한 가스제품, 화학가스 설비, 반도체 장비 등에서 많이 사용되고 있다. 오링 형상의 접촉식 시일의 압출현상에 의한 누출 가능성을 FEM 해석으로 규명하였다. 또한, 오링에서 발생하는 압출 문제를 해결하기 위해 접촉면 부분에 주름 형상을 갖는 멀티립 접촉 시 일구조에 대한 FEM 해석으로 상대적으로 비교하여 멀티립 링의 변형거동 안정성을 확인하였다. FEM 해석결과에 따르면, 오링은 압출변형에 의한 파손 가능성과 가스누출 개연성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 반면에, 멀티립 링 구조물의 최대변형은 오링 대비 2.94배나 낮게 나타나 더 안정적이라 할 수 있다. Contact seals with multi-lip, including contact o-ring, which is widely used in conventional rotating shaft sealing unit and quick coupler, are used in gas products, chemical gas facilities and semiconductor equipment to prevent gas leakage. The possibility of leakage due to extrusion phenomenon of contact seal in O-ring shape was determined by FEM analysis. In addition, the deformation stability of the multi-lip ring was confirmed by a relative comparison with the FEM analysis of the multi-lip contact seal structure having a wrinkle shape in the contact surface area to solve the extrusion problem occurring in the o-ring. According to the FEM analysis results, O-Ring has a high probability of breakage and gas leakage due to extrusion deformation. On the other hand, the maximum deformation of the multi-lip ring structure is 2.94 times lower than that of the o-ring, making it more stable.
