Laser and Arc Manufacturing Processes: A Review

Manufacturing can be defined as the transformation of raw materials into desired products by various processes, such as machining, welding and coating. Today, laser and arc heat sources are largely used as the means for processing raw materials. The laser is one of the most widely used non-contact thermal energy sources in various processes, and the development of laser processes and devices for effective manufacturing is still ongoing. Arc heat sources are widely used in welding and coating processes. In particular, the types of welding processes using arc heat sources are very different depending on the materials used and the purpose of welding. In this paper, individual processes using laser and arc heat that have been reported over the past five years are reviewed, including machining, welding, sintering and coating. Then, hybrid processes that use laser and arc heat sources together are also reviewed. The final part of this review provides a summary and discusses future trends for individual and hybrid processes using laser and arc heat sources.

High-speed machining is one of the most effective technology to improve productivity. Because of the high speed and high feed rate, high-speed machining can give great advantages for the machining of dies and molds. This paper describes on the improvement of machining accuracy in high-speed machining and an estimate about machining accuracy of high-speed machining.

A tray inserting machine is developed for automation of inserting plastic mold tray into a cardboard box. Plastic mold tray is used for protecting breakage of glass bottles. In this paper, two types of processes to divide the plastic mold tray are proposed. As a result, adhesion method by vacuum pad is accepted. And, static and modal analysis for the machine are also carried out to check the machine design using the commercial software, CATIA V5.

Recently, as the high-precision machinery industry has developed rapidly, peripheral equipment has been developed to improve machining efficiency. Peripheral equipment for machining includes cooling units, housings, oil separators, and much more. Oil, such as cleaning and cutting fluids, is used for machining. When waste oil is reused, the contamination of the workpieces and reduction in machining accuracy are generated by the waste oil, including sludge. Therefore, the development of an oil separator is necessary for efficiently separating oil, water, and sludge. The purpose of this study is to analyze the oil separation efficiency and flow characteristics of a high-speed centrifugal separator according to the rotation velocity and diffusion plate. The oil separation efficiency and flow characteristics were analyzed using hydrodynamic theory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results of this study will be used as basic data for the development of a high-speed centrifugal separator.

Shirink wrapping is one of the most effective technologies to reduce wrapping cost. This study presents on the development of a machine for shrink wrapping of cans or drink bottles with thermoplastic films. Structural analysis by CATIA was carried out to give basic design data. The accurate position control, the safety factor of chains, the reduction ratio of the chain and gear, the appropriate heating temperature for banding vinyl are discussed for the optimum shrink wrapping M/C design.

This study presents development of an software for process and die design of hot extrusion through square dies. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than a science with increasing complexity of shape and thinness of section. Therefore, most of the die design is still dependent on personal judgement, intuition and experience. The objective of this study is to develop an software system which includes a design rule extracted from literatures and experts in the extrusion industry. The system also includes finite element simulation program. The developed system is effectively used to design extrusion processes and dies with lead time and trial extrusion.
Automatic Bottle Air Rinser 개발에 관한 연구

This study has been focused on the development of automatic bottle air rinser. It is designed to rinse clean empty bottles prior to filling. The bottles are automatically indexed beneath an air nozzle that has both a clean airjet and vacuum source. The bottle is first given a burst of clean air to loosen any particles from the wall of the bottle. A vacuum sequence follows which removes all particulates into a self contained filter unit. In order to the provide the desired function, analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using FLUENT and CATIA software. The final results of analysis are applied to the design of automatic bottle rinser and the machine is successfully developed.
Flying Optics 방식 Laser Cutting M/C 개발에 관한 연구

A flying optics type laser cutting M/C is developed for the precise cutting of sheet metal. The M/C is a flying optics type one with specified functions of movability and strength in order to increase workability. The gantry frame should be moved with a certain velocity within a relatively short time for the proper cutting of object materials. The gantry is actuated by rack and pinion. This study focused on modal and structural analysis for a laser cutting M/C to give basic design data on the development of the machine. The machine is modeled by placing proper shell and solid finite elements and fictitious mass properties to represent the real one. In order to improve the accuracy of this machining center, feed errors are measured by a laser interferometer.
