This paper discusses the 'identity' issue of academic libraries and librarians in South Korea. With the rapid social changes, both academic libraries and librarians in South Korea are confronted with a crisis for survival. This paper criticizes the two main social ideology led to such a crisis : namely, the extreme forms of capitalism and technological determinism. To overcome the present crisis, this paper recommends the academic libraries to recover or reform their identity as a cultural, expecially, knowledge organization, not just as an information agency. Also recommended for academic librarians is to make their best effort to be a real professional with the required knowledge and experience.

東京지역 韓人의 정보행태에 관한 연구- 오사카지역 韓人과의 차이를 중심으로 -

This study intends to investigate the everyday information behavior of Korean residents in Tokyo area. The discussion includes a comparative analysis on the differences between Korean residents in Tokyo and those in Osaka, with an emphasis on the relationships between demographic characteristics and information behaviors of the Two resident areas. Employing survey and interviews methods, it attempts to illustrate some features in their everyday information need and seeking pattern, and to scrutinize major factors influencing their information seeking behavior. In details, the discussion includes (1) the types and characteristics of their everyday concerns and agony, (2) the attitudes and methods to meet with such concerns and agony, (3) the types and characteristics of information sources which they prefer to satisfy with their information needs, and finally, (4) the factors which have impacts on their information needs and seeking behavior. 이 연구의 목적은 재일한인의 정보행태를 분석하여 재일한인사회의 정보환경을 개선하기 위한 방안을 도출하는데 있다. 이 연구에서는 동경지역에 거주하는 한인의 정보행태를 집중적으로 파악한 후, 이 연구에 앞서 수행하였던 오사카지역에 거주하는 한인의 정보행태와 비교하면서 인구학적 특성에 따른 차이를 분석하였다. 이 연구를 위해 동경지역에 거주하는 한인 349명을 대상으로 한 설문조사와 20명을 대상으로 한 심층면담을 실시하였다. 오사카지역의 경우, 418명을 대상으로 한 설문조사와 40명을 대상으로 한 심층면담을 실시한 바 있다. 이 연구에서는 구체적으로 (1)동경지역 한인의 일상적 고민의 유형과 실체 그리고 대처 행태, (2)일상적 고민의 해결을 위해 그들이 선호하는 정보원과 정보매체의 유형과 실체, (3) 정보추구행태에서 나타나는 특징과 그러한 행태에 영향을 미치는 요인 등에 대해 논의하였다.

재일한인사회의 정보활동에 관한 연구

This study intends to investigate the overall information activities of Korean ethnic community in Japan, and to discuss about the relevance between such information activities and the information needs of Korean residents in Japan. To the end, 51 Korean ethnic organizations and media were visited for the investigation of their information activities, and 767 Korean residents were surveyed and 65 Korean residents were interviewed for the assessment of their information need and behavior. The discussion includes: (1) the everyday information need and behavior of Korean residents in Japan, (2) the major information activities of Korean ethnic organizations and media, (3) the relevance of the Koreans' information behavior and the Korean organizations' information activities, and finally (4) a suggestion on the desirable future directions and roles that the Korean ethnic organizations and media should seek for the overall Korean ethnic community's healthy development. 이 논문의 목적은 재일한인사회에서 이루어지고 있는 정보활동을 종합적으로 조사하고, 그러한 정보활동이 재일한인의 일상적 정보요구와 정보행태에 대처하는데 적합한지에 대해 논의하는데 있다. 재일한인사회의 정보활동에 대한 조사를 위해서는 한인의 밀집 거주 지역으로 알려진 오사카와 동경 등지의 한인단체와 기관 그리고 언론사 등 모두 51곳에 대한 방문조사 및 관계자 면담을 실시하였다. 정보행태에 대한 조사를 위해서는 동일한 지역의 한인을 대상으로 설문과 면담을 병행하였는데, 설문조사에는 767명이 면담조사에는 65명이 각각 참여하였다. 논의의 전개는 한인단체와 정보매체의 전반적인 현황을 먼저 살펴보고, 그들의 활동을 일상적 정보의 생산 및 유통이라는 측면에서 분석하였으며, 그들의 정보활동이 재일한인의 정보요구에 적절히 대처하고 있는지에 대해 평가하고, 마지막으로, 한인단체와 매체를 중심으로 한 정보활동의 바람직한 방향과 추진 방안에 대해 제언하였다.

LINEAR PROGRAMMING OPTIMIZATION OF NUCLEAR ENERGY STRATEGY WITH SODIUM-COOLED FAST REACTORS

Nuclear power has become an essential part of electricity generation to meet the continuous growth of electricity demand. A Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) was developed to extend uranium resource utilization under a growing nuclear energy scenario while concomitantly providing a nuclear waste management solution. Key questions in this scenario are when to introduce SFRs and how many reactors should be introduced. In this study, a methodology using Linear Programming is employed in order to quantify an optimized growth pattern of a nuclear energy system comprising light water reactors and SFRs. The optimization involves tradeoffs between SFR capital cost premiums and the total system U3O8price premiums. Optimum nuclear growth patterns for several scenarios are presented, as well as sensitivity analyses of important input parameters.

한국 공공도서관정책의 추이와 과제

The purpose of this article is to discuss about the progress and problems in Korean public library policies. The emphasis is on identifying both distinctive features and indigenous limitations in Korean Library Act and National Plans for Library Development. This article also investigates the current status and weakness of major policy driving forces such as national library policy committee(President's Committee on Library and Information Policy), administrative support organization, and professional associations. Finally suggested are both strategies and methods for promoting the quality of Korean public library policies, with focusing on enhancing public librarians' capacity of policy participation.

The purpose of this study lies in investigating the resent state and characteristics of monographs produced by Korea and Japan, which are the research products on each other's political and economic situations for the period of 1901-2000. To this end, we identified the major political and economic events and issues in the Korea-Japan relations, also collected comprehensively the monographs produced by each county regarding earth other, and analyzed the resent state md characteristics of the monographs with a special emphasis on the publication period, subject matter and producer. Also identified was the relationship between the production of monographs and the Korea-Japan political and economic relations from a historical perspective. Finally, we suggested the necessity of a knowledge and information system for both effective management and efficient control of such research products.

대학도서관 자동화시스템의 품질평가

This study intends to identify the current situations, and, to investigate the major problems of academic library automation in South Korea. Emphasis was on the quality evaluation of the present library automation systems from the perspectives of both librarians and end-users. Three most representative automation systems were chosen for a comparative analysis: Seoul National University's SOLARS, Postech's LINNET, and Pusan National University's PULIP. Each automation system was analyzed and compared [no another in terms of the development history, the system functions, and, the strength and weakness. The final suggestion includes the philosophy and strategies for the future development of academic library automation systems.

성격적 특성과 정보행태의 관계 - 대학 신입생을 사례로 하여 -

The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between personal traits and information behavior theoretically. Personal traits are often represented by "major type of personality found in an ethnic group or society" and measured by both degrees of affection and dependency in this study. In turn, information behavior is used to include unique features in information needs, information seeking, information source preference, and information searching pattern in library and internet. The data was collected through a survey with 162 college freshmen, and analyzed for both frequency test and Chi-square test. The major research result shows that dependency rather than affection has a statistically meaningful relation with information behavior, in particular, information needs and source preference. Also made are several methodological suggestions for further research.

한국 도서관계에서 독자상담과 독서치료의 의미

This article intends to discuss about the strategies and methods that the Korean library community should follow to make the ongoing experiment of 'bibliotherapy program' be successful, and eventually, settle up as a regular library service program. The main focus of discussion was on figuring out both theoretical foundations and historical roots that can justify such an experiment in Korean libraries. To the end, a comparative analysis to Readers' Advisory Services was conducted, and also done for comparing the special features in Korean libraries with those of American libraries, especially as related to library services to readers. The final suggestion includes the tasks that Korean LIS scholars should undertake to make the ongoing bibliotherapy experiment become an indigenous Korean model for library services.

한국 문헌정보학은 건강한가?

The purpose of this article is to figure out the structural problems which have threaten both scholarship and profession of Library and Information Science in South Korea. In details, this study discusses such major weakness in Korean LIS as vague academic identity, poor research activities, and unreasonable educational systems. The emphasis for discussion is on identifying the unique and indigenous variables which have had deep influences on both development process and current crisis of Korean LIS. Finally suggested are the strategies and methods for promoting the good health of Korean Library and Information Science as an independent academic discipline as well as a prospective profession.
