Vol.17 No.-

Richard's reputation as the pioneer of Anglo-American New Criticism is unassailable. However, some aspects of his poetic doctrine, especially his unwarranted emphasis on the psychological process in poetic experience, and his restatement of the affective theory of art, have become something of an embarrassment to his colleagues. Certainly his terminology such as "balancing of impulses" and "pseudo-statement", and also his distinction between "emotional" and "intellectual" belief have allowed his overall poetics to meet with severe theoretical attacks. Those critics with strong convictions that a poem ought to be both an autonomous world and also a complete mode of knowledge deplore the absence of the cognitive value of poetry in his poetics. In fact, the clash between Richard's affective and objective theories has centered on the problem of belief, a revival of that perennial concern about the adequate role of poetry. The view that poetry is a world sui generis with only a hidden connection to reality is an alternative to the view that poetry is an emotive use of language. While these two views differ in the degree of cognitive value assigned to poetry, both views originated as a defensive tactic against the pervasiveness of scientific truth. Richards, at least in Coleridge on Imagination, is in fundamental agreement with the proponents of poetic belief about the role of poetry as wisdom revealing another Nature to which scientific statement cannot refer.

Vol.18 No.2

Baroque may be the better term to describe the metaphysical poets. It provides a wider perspective in reconsidering the 17th century English poetry as an integral part of European literature. It is also useful in reappraising the Modernistic revival of the metaphysical poets initiated by T. S. Eliot. As its etymological meaning suggests, Baroque poetry seems irregular and grotesque, and does not show any affinity, similarity, and harmony as a whole. So, deriding its outward incongruities, the Neo- classicists adopted the pejorative term of “the metaphysical poets.” However, some innovative critics in the modern era insisted that Baroque poetry had an organic whole unifying the different, distinct, and diverse parts. Eliot’s reappraisal of the metaphysical poets and his tenet of the unified sensibility was the case. Bizarre and inappropriate combinations, and violent distortions prevalent in Baroque poetry was the inevitable result of the artistic labor to express the dark and unfamiliar reality facing the poets, just as the Hebrew prophets struggling to prophesize the alterity of God used unconventional and shocking phrases. Refusing easy clichés, they attempted to make flowing and transient reality felt through the physical sense and ended up with these incongruous and twisted expressions. The unity in Baroque art and poetry was made by the same endeavor to impose a human significance onto the jarring and incompatible aspects of the chaotic world, though the unity in variety of Baroque differs from the unity in sameness of the medieval era, Renaissance, and Neoclassicism.

Objective : This study is aimed to investigate the effects of bee venom and purified bee venom on cell death in synovial cell line. Methods : It was evaluated by using MTT assay, morphological method, flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry analysis, RT-PCR. Results : The result obtained is as follows. 1. The MTT assay demonstrated that synovial cell viability was significantly inhibitted dose-dependently by treatment with BV and PBV in comparison with control. And the inhibitory effect of BV and PBV was almost same. 2. The morphologic study demonstrated that synovial cell showed apoptotic body resulted from apoptosis after treatment with BV and PBV for 6 hours using microscope. 3. The Flow cytometry demonstrated that apoptosis of synovial cell treated with BV and PBV was related with stop of cell cycle in stage of G0/G1. 4. Immunocytochemistry assay demonstrated that COX-II and iNOS were slightly expressed by treatment with BV and PBV in comparison with control group. 5. RT-PCR analysis demonstrated that COX-II were almost down-regulated by high dose treatment with BV and PBV in comparison with control group. iNOS were well down-regulated by treatment with $5{\mu}g/ml$ BV and PBV whereas it was well expressed in control group. Conclusion : These results suggest that bee venom and purified bee venom have significant effect on cell death in synovial cell line and further study is needed in vivo.

Vol.6 No.1

Abstract Art and poetry as an imitation of nature conceived by Aristotle does not mean that the artist duplicates nature as it is. Disagreeing with Plato about where and what reality is, Aristotle believes that nature is revealed or realized through the process of change or growth through which matter takes on its form. Form, or eidos which is regarded as an ideal reality can be created by the poet who imitates nature. Poetry, which does not imitate just the appearance of reality, is a kind of activity of forming the matter into a unified meaning and completeness. Plot, the soul of tragedy, imitates "an action," whose unity and interconnection of the parts and the whole is guided and controlled by the principle of probability or necessity. The poet is thus an imitator and a creator. The term "Imitation" is given a new meaning in Pope, who recommends to "follow nature" and more emphatically to imitate the ancients poets whose rules are "nature methodized." However, imitation of ancient rules for him does not exclude the poetic licence and some nameless graces which are located beyond the reach of art or mechanical rules. M. H. Abrams links grace and irrational inspiration of Romanticism, suggesting that grace itself is incompatible with the principle of rationality in Neo-Classicism. Arguing against the romantic interpretation of grace, Ronald Bogue insists that the happy disregard of rules for Pope should be actually the products of a skillful regulation of materials. According to him, Pope believes that grace and the poetic licence can be achieved by sticking to the ancient precedents that contain the deviations from the rules for the greater aesthetic purpose, that is, grace arises from the proper imitation. Edward Young is bold enough to depart from Pope's doctrine of imitation of the ancients and shifts the emphasis from the literary rules of his contemporary critics to the originality and innate genius which anticipates the Romantic criticism. Describing the process of literary creation with the metaphors of organic growth, he proceeds to distinguish the original writings of organic creativity from the inferior works of mechanical imitation. However, Young's theory of reading is somewhat different from that of writing, and he sees an imitation principle in the act of reading which is motivated by the judgment. While his theory of writing argues for the reverence of the inner self and the imagination, his reading theory never fails to grasp the value of learning and imitating the ancients. It is not the works of Homer but his spirit and his taste, that is the proper object of imitation for Young.

2006 PNF and Movement Vol.4 No.1

Purpose : This study shows the movements of the ankle and the foot in walking stages, and helps to diagnose and treat the problems of the ankle and the foot. The foot in human is a mean of the transportation, body support, and shock absorber. However, the slightest changes in the anatomical position can cause a significant increase of the stress and force in the ankle and the foot. The regular compressive force in the ankle of the normal person is generated by the contraction of the gastrocnemius and popliteus muscles, and transmitted to the achilles tendon. The plantar flexion about 10 degrees occurs immediately after the heel strike, getting ready for the weight acceptance. The shear force about 80 % of the body weight is generated immediately after the heel off of the mid stance phase. In those who have a problem in the ankle, the compression force at the ankle decreased to 1/3 of the body weight, and the shear force decreased, and the compressive force was reached at their maximum level earlier than the normal people. Conclusion : Analysis of the movements at the ankle and the foot in walking phase can make the effort to diagnose and treat the ankle and foot with the problems. However, the further study is necessary.
