PAUF promotes adhesiveness of pancreatic cancer cells by modulating focal adhesion kinase

Pancreatic cancer is a notorious disease with a poor prognosis and low survival rates, which is due to limited advances in understanding of the molecular mechanism and inadequate development of effective treatment options over the decades. In previous studies, we demonstrated that a novel soluble protein named pancreatic adenocarcinoma up-regulated factor (PAUF)acts on tumor and immune cells and plays an important role in metastasis and progression of pancreatic cancer. Here we show that PAUF promotes adhesiveness of pancreatic cancer cells to various extracellular matrix (ECM). Our results further support a positive correlation of activation and expression of focal adhesion kinase (FAK), a key player in tumor cell metastasis and survival, with PAUF expression. PAUF-mediated adhesiveness was significantly attenuated upon blockade of the FAK pathway. Moreover, PAUF appeared to enhance resistance of pancreatic cancer cells to anoikis via modulation of FAK. Our results suggest that PAUF-mediated FAK activation plays an important role in pancreatic cancer progression.

Measuring plate waste in school foodservice is an important means for nutrition, economics, and nutrition education programs effectiveness. Plate waste studies have traditionally been used to evaluate behavior change in nutrition education programs. Students will interalize nutrition information, and there was less waste in the post-test phase. In this study, three methods of measuring individual plate waste were compared : weighing plate waste, visual estimations of plate waste made by trained observers, and ratings of consumption made by students. 1. It can be concluded that the actual weighing of food waste seems to be a more appropriate and sensitive instrument for plate waste determination. 2. Determination of plate waste by actual scale measurement has been the traditional method of identifying the influence of nutrition education on behavior. 3. In actual weight method used rather than visual estimates findings in terms of food behavior relative to school foodservice may actually have been positive. 4. It is therefore suggested that in measuring plate waste to find out changes in food behavior of groups as a function of nutrition education programs, actual scale measurements be used.

The main function of the kidney is to maintain homeostatic balance with respect to fluids, electrolytes, and organic solutes. The normal kidney has the ability to perform this function over a wide range of dietary fluctuations in sodium, water, and various solutes. Kidney diseases are induced by loss of kidney function. The manifestations of kidney diseases are a direct consequence of the portion of the nephron most affected. This study was investigated in various aspects related with causes, kinds of kidney diseases and prevention, therapy including dietetic treatment against this disesase symptom. Kidney diseases are classified to be acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, acute glomerulonephritis, chronic glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, nephrosclerosis, kidney stones, diabetic nephropathy, nephropathic hypertension and renal cancer. Symptom of kidney diseases are proteinuria, erythrocytic haemorrhagia, leukocytic inflammation, pyopoiesis, microbiosis, edema, hypertension and anemia. Diet therapy of kidney diseases has to adequately control nutritions such as proteins, natrium, potassium and phosphorus with characteristic and clinical symptom of diseases. The most important thing is to get an early diagnosis using several methods and to get the positive treatments including diet therapy based on the accurate diagnosis.

We report three cases of recently named Bacteroides spp. isolates, two B. faecis isolates and one B. intestinalis isolate from clinical specimens of inpatients at a Korean tertiary-care hospital in 2011. All isolates were susceptible to piperacillin-tazobactam, imipenem, meropenem, chloramphenicol, and metronidazole.

We compared the activities of tedizolid to those of linezolid and other commonly used antimicrobial agents against gram-positive cocci recovered from patients with skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in Korean hospitals. Gram-positive isolates were collected from 356 patients with SSSIs and 144 patients with HAP at eight hospitals in Korea from 2011 to 2014. SSSIs included impetigo, cellulitis, erysipelas, furuncles, abscesses, and infected burns. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested by using the CLSI agar dilution method. All of the gram-positive isolates were inhibited by ≤1 μg/mL tedizolid. The minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC]90 of tedizolid was 0.5 μg/mL for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which was 4-fold lower than that of linezolid. Tedizolid may become a useful option for the treatment of SSSIs and HAP caused by gram-positive bacteria.
