전통문양의 상징성과 기호학의 관점 -한국 민족설화 속 문양의 상징성을 중심으로-

전통문양은 민족의 삶과 정서적인 가치를 반영하며 전해 내려오는 문화이다. 민족적인 공감을 형성하는 전통문양의 상징적 의미에 대해서 카를 구스타프융(Carl Gustav Jung)의‘집단적 무의식Collectiveunconscious’이라는 개념을 들어 말 할 수 있다. 집단적 무의식은 예술이나 꿈을 통해서도 표현되며 민족정서에도 영향을 미친다. 전통문양이 갖는 상징적인 의미에 대한 기원은 확실하지 않지만 부분적으로 민족정서를 바탕으로 하는 설화에 연유하여 상징화하고 도형화 해왔다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 많은전통문양 중 민족설화와 연계하여 상징적 의미를 유추할 수 있는 문양을 기표로 설정하여 롤랑 바르트의 신화이론의 모형에 의한 분석을 하였다. 현대에 들어 문화를 이해하고 비평하는데 있어서 기호학의 개념이 여러 분야에서 사용되고 있으며 기호학의 관점에서는 모든 문화를 기호현상으로 정의한다. 이러한 기호학적관점을 수용한다면, 전통문양이 갖는 상징성은 그것을 향유하는 집단사이에서 약속된 기호와 같은 성격을 지니고 있기 때문에 기호학에 적용될 수 있는 기호체계를 갖는다. 연구의 분석을 통하여 전통문양은 하나의 기표에 매우 많은 기의들이 존재한다는 특이성을 인지하게 되었다. 뿐만 아니라 반대의 현상으로, 같은 기의를 갖는 기표가 여러 개 존재한다는 것 또한 특이한 점으로 나타났다. 이를 기반으로 전통문양은 유사한 상징체계 안에서 다양한 신화가 이루어진다는 또 다른 예술기호의 특성으로 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구에서 수행한 전통문양에 대한 기호학적 의미작용의 분석은 문양에 대한 논리적이고 객관적인 패러다임(paradigm)을 마련하는데 도움이 될 것이다. 또한 전통문양에 대한 특성과 의미를 계승하고 발전시켜 나가는데 있어서 체계적인 이론을 정립하는데 기호학적 접근 방법은 유용한 학문적 연계가 될 수 있다고 판단된다. 더 나아가 문양에 대한 현대적인 재해석은 우리의 전통문양을 현대적인 감각으로 조형화하고 제품을 개발하는데 있어서 전통적 가치와 정서를 반영할 수 있다. Traditional pattern is a culture that is inherited down, reflecting on the people’ life and emotion value. As for the symbolical significance of traditional pattern forming the people’common sense, we can state with the concept of collective unconscious by Carl Gustav Jung. This concept is expressed through dreams, and finally affects the people’emotion, symbolizes and formalized. Thus, in this paper, I analyzed with a theory of myth by Roland Barthes,setting any pattern as a signifiant that can deduce a symbolical significance in terms of the people’ fable among many traditional patterns. Currently, in case ofunderstanding, criticizing culture, the concept of semiotics is applied to several fields, from which every culture is defined as a phenomenon of sign. Given to this standpoint of semiotics, the symbolization traditional pattern has is likely to show a character such as a sign between the groups that enjoy it, it would be natural to postulate that it has sign system applicable to semiotics. In this regard, traditional pattern can be cognized as having one peculiarity that one signifiant(signifier) has many signifies(signified). Additionally, on the contrary, it appeared another peculiarity that several significants are connected with a signified. From this respect, traditional pattern can be interpreted as another characteristic of artistic sign that various myths exist within similar symbol systems. In closing, it is concluded that the analysis of the activity of semiotics significance in this paper would be helpful for an equipment of a logical, objective paradigm for traditional pattern and thus I will suggest another standpoint enough to understand the essence of our peoples’ culture by establishing a theory related to various fields. Furthermore, Modern re-interpretation of the pattern can reflect the traditional values and emotions for the moulding and developing the product our traditional patterns with the modern sense.
