Micromanufacturing is a useful system for reducing energy consumption. For micromanufacturing, tool clamping and workpiece clamping are important components to realize the machining process. Therefore, a shape memory alloy (SMA) ring type tool holder is developed. In addition, this holder needs cooling and heating processes to execute the tool clamping process. This study suggests a cooling/heating device based on peltier elements. The device will be applied to the heating/cooling process of an automatic tool changer (ATC) for the SMA tool holder. This study introduces the configuration and operating principle of the proposed ATC system. The description and prototype evaluation of this system were given. Plastic bolt and aluminum block were selected to enhance the cooling performance, and the installed tool was changed in 17 s during the experiments.

The welding is very difficult and dangerous for manual welders. Especially double hull structure has very hazardous environment, so shipbuilding industry demands the autonomous system instead of manual welders. This paper describes design of a totally new designed mobile robot, called ‘Rail Runner’, for welding in a double hull structure. Due to the welding work involved in the assembly procedure of a double hull structure, this research addressed both the mechanical and control systems of the robot. The mechanical system of this robot is composed of six axes manipulator for welding function and six axes mobile platform for traveling in the double hull structure. This robot is able to autonomously travel and weld a U-shaped part in a double hull structure. The ‘Rail Runner’ can elevate the efficiency of the welding process against manual welders and the international competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry.

This study developed a cooling/heating device based on peltier elements. The device will be applied to heat and cool SMA rings of the SMA-based tool clamping device. This paper first describes the configuration and operating principle of the proposed cooling/heating device. Second, it presents a prototype of the cooling/heating device. Finally, it describes a cooling/heating test conducted with the prototype, which confirmed that the cooling/heating device can be applied to heat and cool the shape memory alloys of the tool clamping device.

Conventional thermal shrink-fit tool holders have positive features, such as high accuracy, high stiffness and small radial size of the holders, but they require heavy investments for heating and cooling equipment, which should heat the tool holder up to 200~300℃. To escape the heavy investments this paper introduces a novel shrink-fit tool clamp that is able to unclamp a tool at 40~50℃. The proposed tool clamp is able to expand its tool hole by using SMAs which are integrated in its clamp body. Static analysis of the tool clamp body structure was conducted, and mathematical models were deduced. The model is feasible to design the SMA shrink-fit tool clamp for clamping/unclamping operations and miniaturization.
