The purpose of this study is to investigate the pre-service teacher training programs for English teachers and to suggest ways for more effective programs. Sixty-five pre-service English teacher trainees and fourteen English in-service teachers participated in the study and the teaching manuals of four middle schools were analyzed. The results of the study show that the pre-service teacher training programs were not effective in many ways. First of all, the field was totally separated from the university, which resulted in the gap between the knowledge and the teaching experience in the field. Second, there was no specific criteria or guidelines for different subject matter teachers. Third, there were no teachers who took the complete charge of training programs. The suggestions for the better field training are as follows: First, the pre-service teachers should not be separated from their teacher trainers in college while they receive teacher training. Second, a teacher training manual for English teachers has to be developed which reflects the qualifications of English teachers specified in the national curriculum. Third, the current system of selecting training schools has to change and better program such as mentoring system which allows the full responsibility of the trainers should be adopted.

The national curriculum for English in Korea emphasizes the development of communicative competence through the use of task-based learning and communicative activities that suit the student’s needs and levels, as well as the integration of the four skills. This not only requires sophisticated teaching skills, but also a high degree of proficiency in English. The English Teacher Selection Test, which is meant to select quality English teachers, has never been free from being criticized for its lack of validity, consistency, and proper feedback. This study thus analyzes the English Teacher Selection Test items from 2004 to 2006 in terms of percentages of different fields of major and suggests some ideas to make the Test more efficient in serving its purpose, which is selecting quality English teachers.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual use of ICT in teaching or studying English and find out how teachers and students see or evaluate the use of ICT. Eighteen in-service English teachers and 586 middle school students participated in the study. The results of the study show that the teachers have more positive beliefs in ICT use than students. Teachers believe that the use of ICT has positive effects on their students’ studying English, but find it difficult to get well-developed WBT (Web-based teaching) materials. Students believe that their teachers overuse CD-ROM, while students themselves prefer to use more Internet or Web-based materials. Students consider repetition and native speakers’ pronunciation as strengths of ICT use, and distracted attention and troubles with ICT facility as weaknesses of ICT use. The study also discusses whether there are differences in students’ perceptions between urban and rural schools.
Natural Approach 방법을 적용한 초등영어 교과과정 모델

본 연구는 한국의 영어 교육 시스템을 분석하고 이에 적절한 초등학교 학생들을 위한 교과과정을 제시하였다. 현 영어 교육 시스템은 교수법 및 교재 연습방법이 개선되어야 영어교육의 효율성이 증가될 것이다. 본 연구에서는 초등학교 학생들의 영어 학습방법으로 natural approach 와 communicative approach를 채택하였으며 교재로는 사진이나 비디오등과 같은 실제 사물들을 사용하였다. 본 연구에서 제시된 실습견본 교과과정은 교사들이 교과를 개발하는데 도움이 되게 작성하였으며 교사들은 본인들의 교과과정을 개발하면서 자신들이 필요한 훈련을 할 수 있게 작성되었다.
