This study investigated the effects of pairing based on English proficiency and gender on high school students’ speaking task performance. A total of 16 high school students - 4 female advanced, 4 female intermediate, 4 male advanced, and 4male intermediate learners – performed two information gap tasks spotting differences between two pictures, once with a same-level learner and once with a different-level learner. Their performance was analyzed in terms of degree of task completion, amount of utterances and fluency. The results showed (a) advanced level learners performed the task more accurately, more fluently, and in higher length when they were paired with advanced level learners than paired with lower level learners, although the differences were not significant; (b) For intermediate level learners, male students demonstrated a better performance when paired with higher level learners, but female students performed better when paired with the same level learners. The findings are discussed with regard to more feasible and more effective ways of grouping for pair work in high school English classes.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze sinusitis patients who visited the department of pediatrics, OO Korean medicine hospital by using their age and to classify the clinical type by Korean medical theory. Methods The study was conducted based on 178 cases that consisted of sinusitis patients (from 1 to 15 years old) who visited OO Korean medicine hospital from March 2014 to March 2015. We analyzed the age of patients and classified them by the clinical type by reviewing patient's charts. After that, we compared the results with the results of previous studies. Results and Conclusions 178 Patients were studied. 2-years-age group was 19.7% of the study group which was higher than that of previous studies. The Lung-Kidney Yin Deficiency (肺腎陰虛) group was 33.1%, Wind-Heat (風熱) group was 29.8% and the Wind-Cold (風寒) group 18.5%, Spleen-Lung Qi Deficiency (脾肺氣虛) group was 15.7% and the Heart-Spleen Qi Deficiency (心脾氣虛) group was 2.8% of the study group. Children are full of Yang but lack of Yin (陽常有餘陰常不足) so they easily transform into heat and fire (化熱化火). The patients who had sinusitis were most likely to suffer from the common cold for more than a week, once a month. 45.1% of the people from the study group was suffered from common cold more than a week, and 43.8% of the people got common cold once a months. About 21.6 % and 18.3% of the people got common cold twice a month and once every 2 months, respectively. The remaining 15.7% got cold during the season changes.

This study investigated the effects of linking a curricular college English course with extracurricular English programs for facilitating low-achieving EFL university students’ learning of grammar and vocabulary. To enhance students’ learning, three effective strategies were employed in this program: testing, morphological analysis, and spaced repetition. Accordingly, this program consists of (1) a curricular college English course including grammar instruction and weekly grammar quizzes and (2) extracurricular programs including online vocabulary lectures on morphological analysis via an LMS, three online vocabulary quizzes at one-week intervals via Google Forms, and one-on-one tutoring via Zoom. The scores of the online vocabulary quizzes that were part of the extracurricular programs were included in the assignments that were part of the curricular course. This was done to strengthen the connection between extracurricular programs and the curricular course and to thereby promote students’ participation in the former. The data from 43 students who completed the pre-, post-, and delayed post-tests as well as the post-survey questionnaires were analyzed. The results revealed that the linked programs had significantly positive effects on low-achieving students’ learning of grammar and vocabulary. This study provides a model of linking a curricular course with extracurricular programs for low-achieving learners in a level-based curriculum.
러시아어 /t′/의 파찰음화 현상에 대한 음향적 특성 연구

This paper aims to examine some acoustic properties of Russian affricated dental plosive /t′/. Russian language has ‘palatalized’ consonants, and they are produced by raising the front of the tongue so as to touch the hard palate. Palatalized labial consonants are different from dental plosives. When dental plosives are palatalized, they are merged with another articulation which is frication. To analyze Russian affricated dental plosive /t′/, recordings were made of 5 native Russian male speakers producing 5 vowels (/a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/) in isolation and in CV syllables. Measurements were made of duration, intensity, CoG, formant vowel transitions, spectrogram and spectral shapes. The results showed that /t′/ is affricated, the place and manner of articulation were similar to affricate /c/ and /č/. However, when succeeded by vowels, /t′/ still had the acoustic characteristics of dental plosive /t/. This study contributes to a better understanding of acoustic characteristics of Russian affricated /t′/.
Raising EFL Learners’ Awareness of L2 Lexical Errors and Correct Usage: A Dual Coding Approach
이선정 한국영어교육학회 2017 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.72 No.2
This study investigated the effects of dual coding elucidation on raising learners’ awareness of L2 lexical errors and correct usage. Participants included 135 Korean EFL middle school students assigned to either a single-coding or dual-coding group. The single-coding group studied the incorrect and correct usage of target lexical items under a verbal-code-only condition. The dual-coding group studied the incorrect and correct usage under a verbal-plus-visual-code condition. Participants completed posttests at two intervals: immediately after studying the materials and four weeks later. Analyses revealed that dual coding elucidation had significant positive effects on facilitating learners’ awareness of lexical errors and correct usage; these effects remained over time. The results also indicated no significant correlations between learning style and the effectiveness of visuals. Qualitative data demonstrated that students perceived visuals as being helpful in improving accurate lexical use and their engagement in learning vocabulary. The article concludes by discussing the facilitative role of visual encoding in L2 lexical knowledge development, thus expanding on the dual coding theory.
