In order to investigate how the chassis frame stiffness including body structure affects vehicle handling characteristics, in this paper, objective test evaluations such as steady stale circle maneuvering test and pulse input transient test are performed. The basic steer characteristics can be obtained from stability factor and 4 parameter method is used to evaluate vehicle handling characteristics between original vehicle and the other with reinforced chassis. The result shows that vehicle with reinforced chassis has advantages in handling characteristics.

Discrete time modeling is sometimes useful in evaluating the vehicle dynamic characteristics from the test data. In this study, an idealized discrete time model which has ARX(Auto Regressive eXogenous) form is derived from analytical vehicle model which include power steering systems. Physical meaning of the model coefficients are investigated and the effects of the steering system parameters are also studied.

Ball & nut type steering gear box has disadvantages on on-center range as compared with rack & pinion type because of many linkages. In this study, a technique which can improve the on-center loose feel is introduced. The improvement can be obtained by putting simple devices on steering gear box valve body which can change the stiffness of steering gear on on-center handling range. Modeling and analysis of the vehicle including improved steering system is performed.
