This study is a study on the change in the spatial structure of reading rooms in small and medium public libraries. In the past, small and medium-sized public libraries have become important to the layout of bookstores, but they have recently changed in a way that puts emphasis on understanding the space of users. To confirm these changes, domestic and international cases were compared and analyzed as of 2010. Quantitative analysis using SpaceSyntax's VGA and StepDepth enabled a clear distinction based on the composition of the bookshelves, such as high or low visual openness of the reading room before 2010. However, from 2010 onwards, the degree of openness could be seen to converge in the middle as visual openness became blurred between reading areas and books. This can be explained by the spatial composition of the library area, which is more user-centric than functional clarity, and the tendency to gain visual openness. This trend has emerged at home and abroad. Considering these contents, it is necessary for the nation's public libraries to deviate from the bookshelf format to encourage local residents' utilization rates and reading activities in the future. Establishing the individual identity of public libraries in consideration of local cultural characteristics also needs to serve as a new public library for us to break away from the uniform library composition and communicate directly with citizens.
