Drying process in the thin film layer with the thickness less than a few millimeters has been investigated using the simple analytic model based on the heat and mass transfer. Thin film drying is usually used to dry the viscous materials like sewage sludge. The thin film layer of sludge is dried on the metallic surface through which thermal energy is supplied to the layer during drying. The governing equations related to thin film drying are formulated by considering the mass and energy conservation of the layer. The shrinkage of the layer is not considered for the simplification of analysis. In order to solve the equations, the mass transfer rate on the drying surface should be determined. The mass flux of evaporated water vapor on the surface is estimated with the formulation given in the literature. The effect of drying temperature, air temperature, air velocity and relative humidity on drying has been examined to figure out the drying characteristics of the sludge layer.

Although forward osmosis desalination technology has drawn substantial attention as a next-generation desalination method, the energy efficiency of its draw solution treatment process should be improved for its commercialization. When ammonium bicarbonate is used as the draw solute, the system consists of forward-osmosis membrane modules, draw solution separation and recovery processes. Mixed gases of ammonia and carbon dioxide generated during the draws solution separation, need to be recovered to re-concentrate ammonium bicarbonate solution, for continuous operation as well as for the economic feasibility. The diluted ammonium bicarbonate solution has been proposed as the absorbent for the draw solution regeneration. In this study, experiments are conducted to investigate performance and features of the absorption corresponding to absorbent concentration. It is concluded that ammonium bicarbonate solution can be used to recover the generated ammonia and carbon dioxide. The results will be applied to design and operation of pilot-scale forward-osmosis desalination system.

Thin film drying is usually used to dry the viscous materials like sewage sludge. The thin film layer of sludge is dried on the metallic surface through which thermal energy is supplied to the layer during drying. The electric cartridge heater is inserted into the metal plate to supply the thermal energy for drying and the temperature of the metallic surface is controlled to maintain the drying condition to be a specified one. The drying process is observed with the transient variation of temperature of sludge layer, which is measured with thermocouples and a pyrometer. The measured temperature is compared to the analytic solution obtained from the previous study.

The three-dimensional numerical analysis has been carried out to figure out the performance of the thermoelectric micro-cooler. The small-size and column-type thermoelectric cooler is considered. It is known that tellurium compounds currently have the highest cooling performance around room temperature. Thus, in the present study, Bi₂Te₃ and Sb₂Te₃ are selected as the n- and p-type thermoelectric materials, respectively. The thermoelectric leg considered is several 10-micrometer thick. The thickness of the leg may affect the thermal and electrical transport through the interfaces between the leg and metal conductors. The effect of parameters such as the temperature difference, the current, and the cooling power on the performance of the cooler has also been investigated for the thermoelectric micro-cooler.

Thin film drying is specially designed and used to dry the viscous materials like sewage sludge. The thin film layer of sludge is dried on the metallic cylindrical surface through which thermal energy is supplied to the layer during drying. The wall temperature is assumed to be constant during drying in the present study for the simplification. In order to solve the equations, the mass transfer rate on the drying surface should be determined. The mass flux of evaporated water vapor on the surface is estimated with the formulation given in the literature. The effect of some physical parameters on drying has been examined to figure out the drying characteristics of the sludge layer.

The simulation of a heat pump dryer has been carried out to figure out the effect of air flow rate on the drying performance represented by MER, SMER, and so on. The simulation includes the analyses of one-stage heat pump cycle and simple drying process using the drying efficiency. The heat pump cycle with Refrigerant 134a has been considered. In the dryer, some of drying air from the drying chamber flows through the heat pump system, the rest of air bypasses the heat pump system. The two air flows joins before the drying chamber inlet. The performance parameters considered in the present study are MER, SMER, the temperature and humidity of drying air. Those parameters are compared for different total air flow rate or bypass air flow rate.
