Vol.7 No.2

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the dental caries activity of some commercial drinks. Methods: Acidity levels were recorded as pH values of original drinks and amount of 50%-sodium hydroxide (NaOH) required to neutralize by titration 50.00ml of the drink (It was called titratable acid). Acidity of the drinks with S. sobrinus was measured at an interval of one hour after incubating (3℃) the test drinks and control solution which was composed 20.00ml of neutralized drinks as pH 7.0 with 0.2ml of a pooled suspension of S. sobrinus. Results: The drink with the highest pH value was the Cow`s milk (pH 6.70±0.01), and the most acidic was the Carbonated drink (pH 2.40±0.02). The drink with the highest buffer effect was the Fruit juice (139.78±0.76), and the lowest was the Glucose solution(control, 4.42±0.20). The drinks with S. sobrinus during incubation at 37℃ for 24h were decreased to below critical pH 5.5. Spending times from pH 7.0 to pH 5.5~5.0 were Glucose solution (less than 1h), Carbonated drink (3h), Fruit juice (5h), Cow`s milk (8h) and Mixed drink (21h). Conclusions: These results show that some commercial drinks with S. sorbrinus have the possibility of tooth decalcification. Thus, it is suggested that the people who have the low salivary secretion rate and the children who sleep without toothbrushing after drinking need the instruction for diet control and oral health education.

Vol.10 No.2

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of oral health behavior factors to oral health promotion behavior in dental hygiene students and nonhealth-related majors, to identify factors affecting their oral health promotion behavior and ultimately to provide information on the oral health promotion of college students and behavioral factors related to that. Methods: The subjects in this study were three-year-course dental hygiene students and two-year-course nonhealth-related majors in G college located in the city of Gwangju. A self-administered survey was conducted for 11 days from September 9 to 19, 2009, and the answer sheets from 473 respondents were analyzed. To look for connections between their major and the characteristics of their oral health promotion behavior, t-test was utilized, and t-test and one-way ANOVA were carried out to find out the relationship oral health promotion behavior by general characteristics. Besides, multiple regression analysis was employed to grasp factors affecting oral health promotion behavior. Results: Among the subfactors of oral health promotion behavior, the dental hygiene students statistically significantly outdid the nonhealth-related majors in thorough post-meal toothbrushing(p<0.01), toothbrushing method(p<0.001), use of fluorine-containing dentifrice(p<0.001) and good nutrition(p<0.05). But the latter statistically significantly outperformed the former in use of fluorine-containing rinse(p<0.001) and limited sugar intake(0<0.05). Regarding variables affecting oral health promotion behavior, the age group, whether to get a dental checkup over the last year and whether to use oral hygiene supplies were identified as the variables to impact on oral health promotion behavior. Specifically, the age group(dental hygiene students) and the get a dental checkup over the last year(nonhealth-related majors) had a greater impact. Conclusions: To promote the oral health of college students, comprehensive oral health education should be provided, which covers the importance of dental checkup, recommendation for the use of oral hygiene supplies, etc. Specifically, oral health education should be offered as one of general education courses in order for nonhealth-related majors to get into sound life habits and improve their oral health promotion behavior. To make it happen, required institutional measures should be taken.

Vol.9 No.4

The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting the job satisfaction of dental hygienists. The subjects in this study were dental hygienists who worked at dental hospitals, dental clinics and general hospitals in the city of Gwangju. A survey was conducted by mail from January 2 to March 2, 2007. Out of the collected data, 208 answer sheets were s wlyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The dental hygienists investigated got a mean of 3.20 on job satisfaction. Among the job satisfaction factors, relationship with patients ranked highest(3.79), followed by relationship with colleagues(3.62), working environments(3.39), future prospects(3.30), professional status (2.89), pay(2.82) and required workload(2.58). 2. Regarding links between general characteristics and job satisfaction, the older dental hygienists were more satisfied with professional status, pay, required workload and relationship with patients. By marital status, the married dental hygienists expressed better satisfaction at professional status than the unmarried ones. By education, those who were receiving college education or received the same or higher education were more gratified than the junior college graduates. By the total length of career, the dental hygienists whose length of career was longer were more gratified with professional status, future prospects and relationship with patients. By workplace, the dental hospital workers were more satisfied with working environments, and the general hospital employees were more gratified with pay. The dental hospital employees were better satisfied with future prospects as well. As to the impact of the length of career at the current workplace, there was a tendency that those who worked at their current workplaces for a longer time expressed better satisfaction with professional status, pay and relationship with patients. By monthly mean income, the larger income earners had a tendency to be better gratified with professional status, pay and relationship with patients. 3. The general characteristics that were selected as independent variables were identified as the factors that exercised an influence on the job satisfaction of the dental hygienists and made an about 14.0% prediction of it. Out of those factors, the total length of career and monthly mean income had a statistically significant impact on that. The above-mentioned findings suggested that out of the seven job satisfaction components, they gave the lowest marks to satisfaction level with pay. As a result of making a multiple regression analysis, it`s found that job satisfaction was under the influence of the total length of career and monthly mean income. Therefore there should be an improvement in the pay system in order to boost the job satisfaction of dental hygienists, and they should be paid properly in accordance with total length of career.

Vol.12 No.1

This study was conducted to assess macro- and micronutrient compositions in school lunch menus based on the ``Dietary Guideline`` for School Lunches. Ninety-five dieticians in elementary school in Chungbuk were asked to complete a questionnaire on characteristics of the school lunch program (such as type of foodservice, food production system), the information about dietitians (such as age, education, and job history), and the extent of the use of processed foods and frozen foods. They were asked to return the questionnaire with the menus including the name and the quantity of every food ingredient offered during a week. A total of 554 lunch menus provided for a week of June 2004 were analyzed. Average nutrient content per meal was as follows; 660 kcal, energy; 92.9 g, carbohydrate; 26.7 g, protein; 21.1 g, fat; 287 μgRE, vitamin A; 0.5 mg, thiamin; 0.5 mg, riboflavin; 29.3 mg, vitamin C; 338.2 mg, calcium; 3.9 mg, iron; and 97 mg, cholesterol. Average percentages of energy from carbohydrate, protein and fat was 56.2%, 16.2%, and 29.0%, respectively. The mean nutrient content per meal was higher in rural-type than in urban-type schools. The weekly menu of 40% of the schools provided < 55% of energy from carbohydrate, and 39% of the schools offered lunch that provided ≥ 30% of energy from fat. The micronutrient content was generally high when the percent energy from fat was less than 25%. Our results showed that only 52.6% of the schools provided lunches with the energy composition as in the ``Dietary Guideline`` of School Lunches. Whole Milk was the major contributor to fat, saturated fatty acid and cholesterol. We suggest that school foodservices start to provide low fat milk instead of whole milk to reduce fat, saturated fatty acid and cholesterol. If low fat milk is served instead of whole milk, percentage of energy from fat and saturated fat can be reduced from 29% to 25%, and from 10.2% to 9.1%, respectively, and cholesterol could be reduced from 97 mg to 79 mg. Efforts to meet ``Dietary Guideline`` for School Lunches should be made, especially to reduce fat intake, while maintaining essential nutrient intake at sufficient levels for childen.

Vol.12 No.4

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine what image dental hygiene students had about a dental hygienist during clinical practice and what factors affected their image of dental hygienist. Methods : The subjects in this study were the dental hygiene students at three different colleges. After a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 427 respondents were analyzed. Results : The dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice had a higher self-esteem than those who hadn`t in general(p<0.01). A statistically significantly stronger achievement motivation was found among the dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice than those who hadn`t(p<0.01). The dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice had a statistically significantly worse image of a dental hygienist than the others who hadn`t(p<0.01). Whether the self-efficacy, self-esteem and achievement motivation of the dental hygiene students had any impact on their image of a dental hygienist was analyzed in consideration of their clinical practice experience. As a result, the dental hygiene students who had engaged in clinical practice had a more positive image of a dental hygienist when they had a higher self-esteem(p<0.05) and a stronger achievement motivation(p<0.001), and those who hadn`t engaged in clinical practice had a more positive image of a dental hygienist when they had a higher self-esteem(p<0.01). Conclusions : Given the above-mentioned findings, a wide variety of programs should be developed to bolster the self-esteem and achievement motivation of students and improve their image of a dental hygienist, as self-esteem and achievement motivation are the variables that exert the largest influence on one`s image of a dental hygienist.(J Korean Soc Dent Hyg 2012;12(4):781-792)
