Vol.24 No.2

This study focuses on consumers' perceptions of virtual influencers, which many companies recently used for marketing. This study uses the Q methodology to derive what kind of perception consumers have about virtual influencers who work with various appearances, background stories, and worldviews as components. In addition, we want to see how the expected value of virtual influencers differs by age group. To this end, 34 statements were produced through preliminary interviews and literature reviews. This study showed that some consumers preferred appearances similar to humans, despite recognizing that virtual influencers are fictional characters. Some other consumers preferred to feel like a fictional character by maintaining virtuality, confirming that there are both opposite consumers. In addition, consumers expect virtual influencers to have consistency and expertise in the content field covered, and some consumers do not prefer to show an overly commercial appearance. This study will likely provide implications for companies that want to utilize virtual influencers in considering which ones to use for target customers in marketing activities.

A Study on Consumer Emotion for Social Robot Appearance Design: Focusing on Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) and Cluster Analysis

Vol.29 No.1

In order for social robots to take root in human life, it is important to consider the technical implementation of social robots and human psychology toward social robots. This study aimed to derive potential social robot clusters based on the emotions consumers feel about social robot appearance design, and to identify and compare important design characteristics and emotional differences of each cluster. In our study, we established a social robot emotion framework to measure and evaluate the emotions consumers feel about social robots, and evaluated the emotions of social robot designs based on the semantic differential method, an kansei engineering approach. We classified 30 social robots into 4 clusters by conducting a multidimensional scaling method and K-means cluster analysis based on the emotion evaluation results, confirmed the characteristics of design elements for each cluster, and conducted a comparative analysis on consumer emotions. We proposed a strategic direction for successful social robot design and development from a human-centered perspective based on the design characteristics and emotional differences derived for each cluster.

Vol.33 No.1

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the customer experience of generative AI among office workers aged 30 to 40, investigating usability, usefulness, and affect, and understanding concerns and expectations. Design/Methodology/Approach This research used Q methodology to assess the customer experience of generative AI. Users are engaged in a problem-solving journey, and data is collected by having participants rank 36 statements based on usability, usefulness, and affect, referred to as the three goals of User Experience. Participants use a forced distribution table with a scale from -5 to +5 to indicate the subjective importance of each statement. The results identified four groups, reflecting different perspectives and attitudes toward generative AI. Findings Participants express overall comfort with generative AI, perceive AI as more knowledgeable in unfamiliar domains, but harbor doubts about AI's understanding. Disagreements emerge on AI replacing humans, the value of unique human roles, data confidentiality, fears of AI advancement, and emotional impacts. Identified four groups: Users who treat AI as a soulless assistant and are active in business use, Uncle users who want to use new technologies properly and are not afraid of technology, users who recognize the limits of AI despite its efficiency, and users who require strong verification in the future. It has the potential to guide future guidelines, ethical codes, and regulations for the appropriate use of AI. In addition, this approach lays the groundwork for future empirical analyses of generative AI.

Vol.28 No.6

In micro-scale milling, many machining problems are caused by micro-burrs that occur during micro-machining processing. Unlike conventional machining, the production efficiency of micro-machining decreases due to increases in process time and costs due to deburring processes. Micro-burrs are not easy to remove, so it is necessary to suppress their generation by machining condition monitoring. The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of micro-burr size according to the machining conditions in micro-milling process. The wavelet transform technique was used to investigate the correlation between the micro-burr characteristics and the processed signals of cutting force and acoustic emissions; thus, effective burr condition monitoring in micro-milling is proposed.

Exploring Mask Appeal: Vertical vs. Horizontal Fold Flat Masks Using Eye-Tracking

Vol.29 No.4

The global COVID-19 pandemic has transformed face masks from situational accessories to indispensable items in daily life, prompting a shift in public perception and behavior. While the relaxation of mandatory mask-wearing regulations is underway, a significant number of individuals continue to embrace face masks, turning them into a form of personal expression and identity. This phenomenon has given rise to the Fashion Mask industry, characterized by unique designs and colors, experiencing rapid growth in the market. However, existing research on masks is predominantly focused on their efficacy in preventing infection or exploring attitudes during the pandemic, leaving a gap in understanding consumer preferences for mask design. We address this gap by investigating consumer perceptions and preferences for two prevalent mask designs―horizontal fold flat masks and vertical fold flat masks. Through a comprehensive approach involving surveys and eye-tracking experiments, we aim to unravel the subtle differences in how consumers perceive these designs. Our research questions focus on determining which design is more appealing and exploring the reasons behind any observed differences. The study’s findings reveal a clear preference for vertical fold flat masks, which are not only preferred but also perceived as unique, sophisticated, three-dimensional, and lively. The eye-tracking analysis provides insights into the visual attention patterns associated with mask designs, highlighting the pivotal role of the fold line in influencing these patterns. This research contributes to the evolving understanding of masks as a fashion statement and provides valuable insights for manufacturers and marketers in the Fashion Mask industry. The results have implications beyond the pandemic, emphasizing the importance of design elements in sustaining consumer interest in face masks.

Vol.27 No.5

The machinability of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is very poor because of its properties that make it difficult-to-machine, and machining trouble is often observed during microdrilling owing to easy drill wear and fracture. Therefore, it is important to effectively monitor the drill tool state in microdrilling operations. Cutting force and acoustic emission (AE) signals are often used to monitor tool states during limited cutting conditions. Using the cutting force and AE signals simultaneously is suggested in this investigation to increase the effectiveness of monitoring tool states in microdrilling. The relationship between tool wear propagation and these signal characteristics are verified for various feed rates, and a good correlation is obtained from the signal processing results in the frequency domain. The power threshold level of simultaneous cutting force and AE signals in the frequency domain can be adopted to monitor microdrilling states of CFRP drilling.

The formation of micro-burrs in micro-milling processes causes several problems related to productivity and surface integrity. It should be minimized and suppressed by effective monitoring of the cutting conditions. This paper presents the correlation between the micro-burr length and cutting signals in the micro-milling process of an Al alloy (Al6061-T6). The acoustic emission (AE) signals and cutting force signals are acquired during the experiments. The characteristics of the cutting signals are obtained by analyzing the AE root mean square value and resultant cutting force. In addition, the micro-burr length is measured according to the cutting conditions by analyzing a scanning electron microscopy image of the machined surface. The results of this study can be used to enhance the surface quality of micro parts.
