        벅아이 코퍼스를 통해서 본 영어원어민들의 유무성 유형에 따른 단어경계파열음 발화 연구

        In the currunt study investigates how the voicing types influence durations of homorganic word boundary stops. For this purpose, Buckeye speech corpus, which contains numerous spontaneous speech materials, were used. To measure the word boundary stops such as /p#p/, /b#p/, /p#b/, and /b#b/, stop closures of both word-final stops and those plus VOTs of word-initial stops were selected. The results were analyzed based on voicing types such as /voiceless#voiceless/, /voiced#voiceless/, /voiceless#voiced/, and /voiced#voiced/, and showed that word-boundary stops with word-initial voiceless stops were longer than those with word-initial voiced stops due to the VOT differences, and those with alveolar stops were shorter than those with bilabial and velar stops. In addition, the closure durations of the word-final stops were not statistically significant in the durations of word-boundary stops due to the fast rate of the spontaneous speech.         영어원어민들의 연속파열음에 대한 자연발화 연구: 벅아이 코퍼스를 중심으로

        The current study investigates durations of English consecutive stops found in word boundaries based on a spontaneous speech corpus called Buckeye Corpus. The consecutive stops were investigated based on four voicing types and three places of articulations. When two stops are adjacent, they typically share closure durations. The durations of the shared closure duration followed by VOT of the word-initial stops were measured as the durations of consecutive stops. It turned out that the voicing types were statistically significant in the durations of them. Voiceless pairs were the longest, voiced-voiceless pairs second-longest, voiceless-voiced pairs third-longest, and voiced pairs the shortest. The durations of consecutive stops were significantly different when word-final stops were alveolar stops and when word-initial stops were velar stops. This study also suggests that VOT has lost its role as a phonetic cue for places of articulations of word-initial stops.

        한국인들의 영어유성파열음과 이완모음 발화에 대한 연구

        Two groups of Korean students produced English voiced stops and lax vowels. One group simply followed an American English speaker``s pronunciation and the other group learned phonetic information about them before they pronounced them. We compared VOTs for voiced stops and formants for lax vowels. The results show that both groups were good for the low front lax vowel. However, both groups`` pronunciations were far from those of the American English speaker for the high back lax vowel and all of the voiced stops. We assume that this is because of the vowel merger in American English and the influence of the phonological contrasts of Korean stops, respectively.

        단어경계를 이루는 영어파열음들의 유무성에 따른 길이 비교

        This study is aimed to investigate whether there are differences of durations of homorganic stops with voicing differences across word boundaries between native speakers of English and Korean. For data collection, eleven American English and twenty one Korean speakers participated in a production experiment. The participants’ sounds were recorded and analyzed with Praat, and statistics were done with SPSS. The durations of the stops produced by English speakers are in the order of /voiceless#voiceless/, /voiced#voiceless/, /voiceless#voiced/, and /voiced#voiced/. This is because durations of word-final stops and VOTs of word-initial stops are different according to their voicing features. In the Koreans’ productions, durations of /voiceless#voiceless/ and /voiced#voiceless/ are similar to each other, and /voiceless#voiced/ and /voiced#voiced/ are also similar to each other. This is because durations of word-final stops are similar to each other due to the so-called coda neutralization in Korean. Thus, the durations of word boundary stops in the Koreans’ productions are distinguished based only by the VOTs of word-initial stops. This study also illustrates some other interesting findings in detail.

        영어전설고모음 인식에 대한 ERP 실험연구

        The mismatch negativity (MMN) is known to be a fronto-centrally negative component of the auditory event-related potentials (ERP). Naatanen et al. (1997) and Winkler et al. (1999) discuss that MMN acts as a cue to a phoneme perception in the ERP paradigm. In this study a perception experiment based on an ERP paradigm to check how Korean and American English speakers perceive the American English high front vowels was conducted. The study found that the MMN obtained from both Korean and American English speakers was shown around the same time after they heard F1s of English high front vowels. However, when the same groups heard English words containing them, the American English listeners" MMN was shown to be a little faster than the Korean listeners" MMN. These findings suggest that non-speech sounds, such as F1s of vowels, may be processed similarly across speakers of different languages; however, phonemes are processed differently; a native language phoneme is processed faster than a non-native language phoneme.

        L1 Transfer in Perception of English Stops by Korean Female Teenagers

        This study aims at exploring how Korean female high school students perceive English stops. Recently Korean stops have undergone changes. The VOTs of lenis and aspirated stops have been overlapped and hence f0 has been a perceptual cue to distinguish them. In previous studies, f0 was also used as a perceptual cue in Korean speakers’ identification of English stops although it has little effect on English speakers’ identification of them. The Korean speakers relied on both VOT and f0 as they did for Korean stops. But which of them is a primary cue has been debated. Based on the perception experiment by Korean female teenagers prepared for this study, the VOT was proven to be a primary cue and the f0 to be a secondary cue. The different results between the current study and previous studies will be discussed.

        어중자음이 유무성 대조를 이루는 영어 단어 발화 연구

        This paper investigates how English words with word-medial voicing contrasts are produced by English and Korean speakers. A production experiment showed that while distinguishing the voicing contrasts of the word-medial consonants, both the English and Korean speakers relied on durations of the word-medial consonants as well as the preceding vowels. However, English speakers distinguished them more peculiarly by producing long vowels and consonants longer and short vowels and consonants shorter than Koreans did. In addition, the durations of the suffix vowels were in proportion to durations of the root vowels in both speakers` productions. However, the English speakers produced the suffix vowels with creaky voice whereas the Koreans did not.

        한국인들과 영어원어민들의 영어 고모음 인지에 관한 사건관련 뇌전위 연구

        This study examined English and Korean speakers" brain responses to English high vowels. An ERP experiment was conducted using synthesized vowels to obtain brain waves and find their differences called mismatch negativity (MMN). The experiment results showed that both English and Korean speakers" brain waves had negative peaks around the same time after they heard the stimuli. However, the MMN peak of the English speakers was higher during longer periods than that of the Korean speakers. This is assumed to be a typical pattern for native speakers when they involuntarily hear phonemes of their mother tongue. There was no statistical difference between the Korean speakers" brain responses based on English proficiency levels.

        영어원어민들과 한국인들의 영어 어말 치경마찰음 발화에 대한 연구

        In this paper English word-final /s/ and /z/ produced by English and Korean speakers were investigated. The durations and maximum intensities of these fricatives with those of their preceding vowels were compared. In the English speakers’ productions, they relied on the ratio of the durations of them as well as the ratio of the maximum intensities of them. In their productions, the /s/ was long in duration and high in maximum intensity and its preceding vowel was short in duration whereas the /z/ was short in duration and low in maximum intensity and its preceding vowel was long in duration. However, the maximum intensities of the preceding vowels were not different in their productions. But in the Korean speakers’ productions, they relied on neither the ratio of the durations of them nor the ratio of the maximum intensities of them. In their productions, the /s/ and the /z/ were not different in durations, but the duration of the preceding vowel of the /s/ was shorter than that of /z/, and the maximum intensities of the /s/ and /z/ as well as their preceding vowels were not different. Based on these results we can conclude that in distinguishing /CVs/ and /CVz/ words, English speakers used durations and intensities of the word-final fricatives in addition to durations of the vowels whereas Koreans used only durations of the vowels.

        영어 후위고설모음들의 반응시간과 인식에 대한 연구

        This study investigates how American English high back vowels are identified. American English and Korean speakers participated in a phonetic experiment for this study. This study shows their response times of the vowels and discusses how the speakers identified them. For the experiment I used a synthesized vowel continuum between American English /u/ and /0/ based on American English male speakers' voice obtained by Peterson and Barney (1952). I manipulated spectral steps and vowel duration of the stimuli. The statistical results showed that American English speakers were not able to distinguish the stimuli based on spectral quality. Instead they relied on vowel duration. This suggests that the American English high back vowels have changed since Peterson and Barney recorded them in 1952. The Korean speakers also relied on vowel duration, not spectral quality since they could not distinguish them. American speakers' response times of these vowels were not affected by both spectral quality and vowel duration. Koreans' response times were affected by vowel durations only.
