Current vehicle exhaust aftertreatment systems using mostly three way catalysts require a long light-off time, resulting in such a low conversion efficiency during cold start that these systems are very difficult to comply with the most stringent future emission regulations. As a promising alternative to overcome this shortcoming, a photocatalytic system Il3s been recently developed. In this study, thermal conversion efficiency and electric cll3racteristics of a photocatalytic reactor as a function of light exposure time Il3ve been investigated. For this purpose, chosen are two different types of photocatalyst and additive catalyst which have been developed with photocatalytic reactivity and mechanical and chemical durability taken into consideration. These two catalysts are mixed with highly optimized ratios, coated on a honeycomb monolith substrate, and thermal conversion efficiency has been measured on an engine test bench. EU and CARB demand more stringent emissions regulations and OBD functions of components emitted harmful emission. It also demands that MIL is light-on to inform the failure to the driver when the converter is failed in its function. Usually dual oxygen sensor method is used for converter OBD monitoring. However, introduced methods for converter monitoring are applied higher temperature than light-off temperature and give poor resolution between OBD index and emissions to meet LEV II programs.<br/> In this study, OSCs of aged and fresh converters are investigated with an absolute measuring method and dual oxygen sensor methods at lower temperature than light-off temperature. As dual oxygen sensor methods, amplitude ratio method and time delay method were examined. The relationship between absolute OSC and amplitude ratio is evaluated as a function of converter inlet temperature. The temperature which can give a good resolution for converter monitoring is suggested. Also, the relationship between absolute OSC and time delay is represented.<br/>

The components affecting the extrinsic transconductance (g<sub>m_ext</sub>) in In<sub>0.7</sub>Ga<sub>0.3</sub>As quantum-well (QW) high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) on an InP substrate were investigated. First, comprehensive modeling, which only requires physical parameters, was used to explain both the intrinsic transconductance (g<sub>m_int</sub>) and the g<sub>m_ext</sub> of the devices. Two types of In<sub>0.7</sub>Ga<sub>0.3</sub>As QW HEMT were fabricated with gate lengths ranging from 10 μm to sub-100 nm. These measured results were correlated with the modeling to describe the device behavior using analytical expressions. To study the effects of the components affecting g<sub>m_int</sub>, the proposed approach was extended to projection by changing the values of physical parameters, such as series resistances (R<sub>S</sub> and R<sub>D</sub>), apparent mobility (μ<sub>n_app</sub>), and saturation velocity (v<sub>sat</sub>).

As a part of stringent emission regulations, OBD on a converter is requested by EU and CARB. It demands that MIL is light-on to inform the failure to the driver when converter is failed in its function. Usually dual oxygen sensors method is used for converter OBD. For this, detail methods, like as amplitude ratio, time delay and frequency ratio methods are adapted for vehicle application. Actually the cars which are produced after MY94 for US market are using one of these methods.<br/> In this study, OSCs of conveters are investigated with an absolute measuring method. The converters are aged with a furnace aging, an engine bench aging and vehicle aging method to represent various aging condition in field applications. An OBD index that is used for TLEVs regulation is also investigated to find a relation between two parameters. The relations of these parameters with THC emission on vehicle are evaluated.<br/>

Oxygen sensors taken form the aftereatment systems of 4 vehicles which had been aged in domestic filed were examined for aging effects on emissions using a idle engine bench. Also the artificial sensor signal generated by fuction generator was supplied to ECU, instead of oxygen sensor to simulated aging effects of oxygen sensor. This study shows that reduction of amplitude, deformation and shift of mean value of aged sensors seriousely affect on the engine out emissions and the performance of TWC.
