A thirty-five week old elk was referred for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) confirmation from Chungnam province in Korea. Necropsy revealed much bloody contents in the lumen of small and large intestines, and reddening of its mucosa. Microscopically, few coccidia showing various developmental stages were infiltrated in lamina propria of small intestine with granulomatous inflammation and congestion. They were identified as Eimeria spp. according to their location and morphological characteristics. Because fecal examination and oocyst culture were not available, the species of the Eimeria could not be confirmed. There were no detection of pathogenic bacteria such as clostridia and virus in intestinal contents. CWD was shown to be negative in immunohistochemistry test. In conclusion, it was the first Eimeria case detected in small intestine of Korean domestic elk as far as we know although Eimeria spp. were not the main cause of death.

Several methods for rapid and accurate detection of VTe-producing E coli were established. These methods contain beta-glucuronidase-secretion test, beta-haemolysis-production test in blood agar, verocytotoxicity test, and PCR. All of the VTe-producing strains made beta-haemolysis on 5% sheep blood agar. VTe-producing strains secreted beta-glucuronidase whereas 0157:H7 strains producing VTI or VTII did not secrete that enzyme. Verocytotoxicity test was established for rapid diagnosis. VTe detection was rapider in Vero cell suspension than Vero cell monolayer. In PCR, there was a positive result only in VTe-producing E coli, not in VTI or VTII-producing E coli. In this experiment, 165 strains of E coli were islated from feces or intestinal contents of post-weaning piglets showing nervous sign or diarrhea. And 20 strains of E coli that produced VTe were selected by verocytotoxicity test and PCR. According to these experiments, there was a direct correlation between verocytotoxicity test and PCR. And verocytotoxicity test is recommended as a routine diagnostic method and PCR does as a accurate diagnostic method to detect VTe-producing E coli.

We report septicemic colibacillosis accompanied by white-spotted kidney in a 30-day old female Holstein-Friesian dairy calf. Grossly, there were numerous white spots sized average 0.5cm in diameter in both kidneys. When sectioned sagittally, there were radially oriented gray streaks extending outward and reaching the renal cortex. The renal papillae were ulcerated, white to gray in color and very friable. Histologically, there was extensive purulent inflammation characterized by severe neutrophilic cellular infiltrations in the tubular lumens and interstitia. In addition, massive coagulative necrosis were found in the apices of papillae. Numerous Gram-negative bacterial colonies were detected in both of the renal and lung tissues. Beta-hemolytic Escherichia coli (E. coli) was purely isolated from the renal parenchyma, peritoneal surface and pleural surface. Based on the above results, we suggest that the generalized septicemia with pyelonephritis may be oriented from the lower urinary tract infection with E. coli in this case.

Recently, the number of stray dogs is proportionate to the increase of the number of the companion dogs. Sarcoptic scabiei var canis, causing scabies, is one of the most important canine zoonotic arthropods in Korea and around the world. Thus, we have tried to know the prevalence of canine scabies in the stray dogs in Korea. A total of 565 stray dogs were collected from the rescue centers all over the country from Jan. 2006 to Dec. 2006. They were grouped with euthanasia or natural death and examined for the gender and age estimated by dental formula. To identify the lesions, the whole body was grossly examined and tested pathologically. Thirty two (5.66%) of 565 dogs were diagnosed as canine scabies. Dogs from urban areas had fewer scabies (0.62%) than those of rural areas (12.5%). Prevalence of scabies in male and female dogs was no difference as 5.96% and 5.25%. Euthanasia group showed higher prevalence (6.48%) than natural death group (2.44%) in scabies. Old dogs over five years showed lower infestration (1.82%) in scabies. In histopathological findings, there were mites in the burrows formed in the subcorneal space. Acanthosis, hyperkeratosis with crust, and vascular dilatation were main findings. One hundred thirteen (20%) of 565 stray dogs were diagnosed to have skin disease. Among them, canine scabies is the most prominent ectoparasite as 5.66 %. With previous reports on human infection in Korea, canine scabies must be regarded as the important zoonotic canine skin disease. Accordingly, for the human and canine hygiene it is imperative that stray dogs with skin problems are segregated and tested for the parasites to treat properly as soon as arriving at rescue shelter.

Porcine juvenile pustular psoriasiform dermatitis (PJPPD) is a disease of young pigs and characterized by nonpruritic round eruption of skin. The cause of this disease is yet undetermined but is presumed to be genetic predisposition. There may be few opportunities for veterinarian to detect this disease compared with actual situation in field because these lesions resolve spontaneously in two months. The authors detected spontaneous PJPPD case and performed clinical and pathological studies on three pigs from one farm. The specific skin lesions were observed in the forty-day old pigs of mixed breed, which were produced by the sows received semen from the same boar, restrictively. However, there was no skin lesion of pigs in suckling or fattening periods. Grossly, lesions were commonly found on the ventral abdominal part as a papule and were spreaded to the skin of whole body. With the spreading of lesions centrifugally, skin was showed as a umbilicated plaques or mosaic pattern with a few pustules or crusts. Microscopically, the most prominent lesion was the psoriasiform hyperplasia with acanthosis, down growth of rete ridges, exocytosis of eosinophils and neutrophils, ballooning degeneration of superficial epidermis, and koilocytic degeneration of keratinocytes. Additionally, there were moderate dermal edema and severe mixed cellular infiltration, especially eosinophils. No infectious agent which can cause the skin lesion, was detected or cultured, and no lesion caused by infectious agents was also observed, pathologically. With pathological results of this study, it is supposed that pathogenesis or severity of PJPPD may be related to the infiltration of eosinophil or hypersensitivity.

Several studies have been performed on the bovine leukemia since bovine leukemia virus (BLV) had been detected in 1982 in Korea. We have conducted histopathological study on the bovine lymphoma caused by BLV because only limited results were reported on the pathological characterization of lymphoma. Lymphoma tissues were obtained from cattle necropsied and slaughtered during a designated period. Lymphoma was classified histopathologically according to the National Cancer Institute Working Formulation. Leukotic tissues consisted of fairly uniform sheets of closely packed medium to large lymphocytes without any architectural arrangement in all 30 cases. Twenty five cases belong to diffuse large cell type, while three cases were diffuse mixed cell type, and two cases were immunoblastic large cell type among 30 cases. Follicular type lymphoma was not detected in this study. The mitotic index of tumor cells showed average 2.5 in the field of 400X. Nuclear cleavage was detected in 53% of cases. Multi-nucleated cells were detected among tumor cells in 30% of lymphoma cases. In conclusion, the most common morphologic cell type of bovine lymphoma in Korea was a diffuse large cell type with multinucleated cells and nuclear cleavages.

Toxocara (T.) canis, round worm of dogs and cats, is probably the most common gastrointestinal helminthes of domestic canid and is ascarid nematodes in the order Ascaridida, family Toxocaridae. The prevalence of patent toxocariasis is highest in the young dogs and much less common in adult dogs. There are few reports on the status of T. canis prevalence of dogs in Korea. Few cases of human visceral larva migrans also reported in Korea. However, as far as we know, there is no report on the canine toxocariasis case determined by pathological findings in Korea until now. In this research, we diagnosed canine toxocariasis by fecal egg test and pathologic findings in 2-month old two Pointer dogs. Typical T. canis eggs were detected in the fecal test. Numerous adult ascarids in the lumen of small intestine and stomach in one dog and multifocal white necrotic lesions in lung, liver, and kidney in another dog were observed grossly. Histologically, multifocal necrosis, eosinophilic inflammation and intralesional ascarid larva were prominent findings in the lung, liver and kidney.
