Dynamic and static characteristics of the beam structure are mainly influenced by the shape of the cross section and material properties. Since the shape of the cross section determines the stiffness of the beam. such as I_x. I_y. J. an optimal shape of the cross section of the beam must be searched for the optimal stiffness design of the beam structure. In this paper an optimal design methodology for the thin-walled beam structure is presented.<br/>

The failure of forging die often occurs as a result of growth of microcracks-reffered as brittle damage. In this study, an analysis of brittle damage coupled with the thermo-elastic finite element analysis is presented. A damage function suggested by Krajcinovec is utilized and a thermomechanical continuum frame work is carried out with a brittle damage. Defined as a vector considering the shape of common microcracks in the brittle metals. An application of the proposed model to the die for the ball stud is given.<br/>

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of operation factors of a typical main spindle system of the efficiency of machine tool. In this study, both static and dynamic analyses of typical main spindle system of the machine tool are performed using a finite element method. These finite element results are then used to predict the bearing stiffness, the amount of heat generation as well as the bearing life in the spindle system. Effects of material type of ball-bearing, bearing-lubricant type and main spindle bearing preload are examined.
